I’ve always loved an immortal Byronic Hero falling in love with a human or tales about the romantic creatures of the night. The themes of mortality and redemption are compelling, and I can’t get enough of these magical love stories – otherwise known as paranormal romance books. Perhaps you’re the same.
What is Paranormal Romance?
Paranormal romances, or supernatural romances, tell love stories outside scientific explanation. From vampires, witches, ghosts, werewolves, aliens, and psychic abilities to even time travel, the paranormal romance genre is about impossible obstacles and forbidden love, making these novels stand out from the regular romance category.
Furthermore, paranormal romances blend the magical, horror, and the fantastic with reality. This blend makes the genre compelling because anything can happen, whether in fantasy worlds or contemporary fantasy.
A List of Paranormal Romance Books
As an avid reader of the genre, I compiled a list of some of the best paranormal romance books, urban fantasy, and paranormal romance series available. I’ve also included supernatural novels or fantasy romance books with love stories between paranormal characters (e.g., witches, vampires, ghosts, etc.).
The selection of books on the list is a mix of books I loved or are popular best-sellers. Ultimately, there is a book here for everyone who enjoys a supernatural love story.
Content Notes and Steam Levels
To make adding books to your reading list easier, I’ve included a content note of what to expect – including steam levels between 1 and 5. (Although, be aware, since we don’t prefer overly steamy books here at The Silver Petticoat Review, we focused more on heat levels between 1 and 3 with a handful of 4s.)
My ratings are subjective and based on a holistic overall feel. Steam levels also may differ from the rest of the book’s content. There may still be violence, profanity, etc. – which I also tried to include in my content notes.
That said, the content ratings (beyond being subjective) are based on memory and thorough research. So, make sure to do your own research as well. I hope this is a helpful starting point.
How we rate steam levels at The Silver Petticoat Review:
One: Wholesome, G-like, some mild kissing. A steam level one book may also include unrequited love stories, implied romances, etc., without anything physical happening.
Two: PG to mild PG-13 romance with more passionate kissing, mild suggestive language/dialogue, or closed-door moments with implied sensuality. “Two” books may also be completely closed-door, but the book’s tone better suits a two overall.
Three: These books might include a bedroom scene or even up to a small handful, but they are more emotional, less graphically depicted, and not the book’s focus. “Three” books may also have more suggestive dialogue and narration.
Four: A very explicit book with graphically depicted love scenes. The book, however, still has a story beyond the bedroom scenes.
Five: Erotica.

In short, Silvia Moreno-Garcia delivers phenomenal characters and a unique paranormal love story. The book was a Nebula Award finalist, and it is an entrancing fairy tale.
Content Note: There’s a scene with strong language and animal sacrifices. PG-13-like read with a steam level 1 romance.

#4: The Host by Stephenie Meyer

Why You Should Read: Ever since I first watched the still brilliant Roswell series (the original), I’ve loved a good alien/human romance. If you’re the same as me, look no further than The Host. This one is all about the entertainment factor and the swoon.

#5: The Invisible Life of Addie Larue by V. E. Schwab
Book Summary: A young woman in 18th-century France makes a deal to live forever – only a curse comes with it: everyone she meets will forget her.
That is until 300 years later when Addie meets a young man who remembers her name.
Why You Should Read: The Invisible Life of Addie Larue has a unique take on what it means to be immortal. Plus, the chemistry with the dark devil-like figure is compelling stuff. The love story with the mortal is okay, but the writing is fantastic.
Content Note: There is strong language in the book. Furthermore, in Addie’s past, she had to prostitute herself to survive. There are few scenes of sensuality. Plus, some harassment and assault. Steam level 3.

#6: The Mermaid by Christina Henry

Why You Should Read: For a historical fairy tale about a mermaid, which is intriguing. This is not a historical romance but has two love stories. Read this one for an interesting female character.

#7: The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
Book Summary: The National best-seller follows two star-crossed magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been forced into a dangerous competition with each other since their childhoods. But what happens when they fall in love? And how will they deal with the consequences?
Why You Should Read: Technically, this one isn’t a romance but has a slow-building love story! Mix historical fantasy with magicians, a circus (Le Cirque des Rêves), lyrical prose, and magic. It’s a must-read.

#8: Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman
Book Summary: The Owens women have been blamed for everything that goes wrong in their New England town for over 200 years because people believe they’re witches.
In the modern-day, sisters Gillian and Sally try to escape the gossip by moving away, but magic brings them back together and back to their Massachusetts town.
Why You Should Read: While I prefer the movie on a personal level, I always enjoy Alice Hoffman’s way with words. Read this for interesting characterization and a good story. However, the film is much more romantic if you want to swoon.
Content Note: F-Words throughout the novel, domestic abuse, and suggestive talk/lust. Steam level 3.
#9: Spirit of the Knight by Debbie Peterson
Book Summary: Talented artist Mariah Jennings is hired to paint a 13th-century Scottish castle. While there, she crosses paths with a ghost – but not just any spirit – he’s Sir Cailen Braithnoch – a cursed (and handsome) Scottish knight she recognizes from portraits.
Together, they must unravel the mystery of his passing as they deal with supernatural forces, fate, and falling in love.
Why You Should Read: Every once in a while, you just need a good old-fashioned ghost story. With Scottish castles and a sweet romance with a knight, what’s not to love? So, if you like closed-door paranormal romances and Highland castles, this book is for you!

#10: Sunshine by Robin McKinley
Book Summary: Sunshine is a novel set in an alternate magical world where vampires and humans coexist. It follows the story of a baker kidnapped by vampires who then allies with another captured vampire, Constantine. She comes from a magic-wielding family helping her fight against their common enemy.
Why You Should Read: If you loved McKinley’s fantastic YA fantasy romances and fairy tale retellings, you’ll love her adult vampire love story. The world-building is phenomenal, with a unique take on vampires—a top choice if you love vampire novels with a literary writing style.
Content Note: Most love scenes fade to black, but there is one more explicit scene with strong language in the middle of the book. Keep in mind that this book isn’t as “closed-door” as the teen books she writes—steam level 3.
#11: The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna

Book Summary: Deaf hatmaker Juliet Emerline risks losing her home to Lord Nicolas Thornton, an enigmatic architect. When she encounters a ghostly gentleman and unearths a web of secrets, she finds herself torn over whom to trust (and love): the architect or the ghost.
Why You Should Read: For readers of the genre who also love a more literary style to the writing. A.G. Howard creates a world of steamy paranormal romance and intrigue with excellent characterization. Plus, I love the Victorian setting!
Content Note: It’s more steamy than explicit, but it gets very sensual and is not behind closed doors. Steam level 3. This is a New Adult book, not a Teen one, so keep that in mind. There isn’t a lot of profanity, but adult themes are included.
#15: Bitten & Smitten (Immortality Bites #1) by Michelle Rowen
Book Summary: While on a blind date, Sarah is turned into a vampire and forced into a vampiric society with vampire hunters chasing her down.
She soon connects with the 600-year-old vampire, Thierry de Bennicoeur, who offers to help and show her the ropes – as long as she helps him die.
Why You Should Read: If you’re looking for adult vampire romance books without all the explicit language and explicit steaminess. Extra points for the humor!

#16: Blood Price (Vicki Nelson Book Series) by Tanya Huff
Book Summary: PI, Viki Nelson, partners up with the 500-year-old vampire (and son of Henry VIII), Henry Fitzroy, on supernatural cases.
Why You Should Read: If you watched the underrated Canadian vampire TV Series Blood Ties, you must check out the book series the TV show was based on! Plus, you can finally get an ending.
This urban fantasy series about Vicki, a private investigator, and the vampire Henry Fitzroy is one of the first in the urban fantasy genre published in 1991. While imperfect, it’s enjoyable, and I love the Toronto setting!
Content Note: The love scenes are typically more faded to black. However, there’s some language and violence, including animal slayings—steam Level 3 best suits the books, with suggestive dialogue and sensuality.
#17: Bounty Collected (Solstice Huntress Series) by Lindsey Devin
Book Summary: The book series follows a bounty hunter who is secretly half-fae with incredible power. She pretends to be human and has been assigned to work alongside Corbin Frost, an Unseelie Enforcer and a hybrid fae-demon who can’t find out her secret. But she finds herself attracted to him.

Why You Should Read: An adult fantasy romance series for Harry Potter fans and a mesmerizing read, the world-building draws you into this paranormal world of vampires, witches, academia, and time travel. By far, one of the best. The writing style is fantastic, and the TV show adaptation is just as swoony!

#25: Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett

Why You Should Read: A historical fantasy about fairies written for adults with an epic love story? This is by far one of the best paranormal romances I’ve read in a while. I can’t wait for book two! Be prepared to stay up all night for this one. The chemistry and bantering are phenomenal.

#26: Enchanted to Meet You (Witches of West Harbor Series) by Meg Cabot

#27: For the Wolf (The Wilderwood) by Hannah F. Whitten
Book Summary: Red, the only Second Daughter in centuries, anticipates her sacrifice to the Wolf in the Wood to release the world’s imprisoned gods.
However, she soon discovers that the legends are false, that her untamed power is a calling rather than a curse, and that the Wolf is actually a man. And she now must go on a journey to save her world from the gods.
Why You Should Read: A Goodreads Choice Fantasy Nominee, For the Wolf, is a fairy tale must-read! While the magic system isn’t fully explained, I enjoyed this Beauty and the Beast/Red Riding Hood retelling. The monster/magic dynamic between Red and Eammon is fabulous.
Content Note: Some gory scenes and some mild language. Book one is closed door, while book two has a few bedroom scenes – including one with questionable consent—steam level 3.
#28: The Ghost and Mrs. McClure (Haunted Bookshop Mysteries) by Alice Kimberly (Cleo Coyle)
Book Summary: Young widow Penelope Thornton-McClure manages a haunted mystery bookshop in Rhode Island with her Aunt Sadie.
When a bestselling author reveals that a 1940s homicide connects to the store, he dies. Now Penelope must solve the case with a PI – who also happens to be a ghost.
Why You Should Read: For readers who love mysteries and just hints of feelings between the two main characters. A fun, cozy mystery series!

#29: The Golem and the Jinni Series by Helene Wecker
Book Summary: Two supernatural beings, Chava, a golem, and Ahmad, a jinni, cross paths in 1899 in New York. Despite their opposing natures, they form a deep bond, but when a powerful danger emerges, their existence is challenged in this intriguing series that blends historical fiction and fantasy.
Why You Should Read: I love the use of Arabian and Jewish folklore to create a unique paranormal romance that has nothing to do with vampires, witches, or werewolves. Additionally, the historical setting is a bonus for us historical fiction readers.

#30: The King’s Captive: (Gate of Myth and Power Book 1) by K.M. Shea
Book Summary: In a world filled with supernatural beings, a young woman who can transform into a housecat finds herself an outcast amongst her peers.
When she encounters Noctus, a powerful elf king, he takes her in as a pet, not knowing that she’s not really a cat. So, now she must escape her captor without him finding out the truth.
Why You Should Read: I love that the main character can turn into a cat! This paranormal romance is with an elf, which isn’t common in urban fantasy series.

Why You Should Read: Time travel, romance with a 17th-century leading man, magic, mystery, and antiques? This is one immersive read if you’re searching for a time-travel romance without all the steam.

Why You Should Read: Ilona Andrews is awesome, and the Kate Daniels books are their most popular series for a reason. I am adding this one to my own TBR list.

Why You Should Read: The historical detail is exquisite and accurate. Plus, the story is phenomenal, with a fantastic romance and a compelling group of characters. In short, this time travel love story is world-famous for a reason. However, some of the content is triggering, making it hard to read.
Content Note: These books aren’t smut but deal with assault and violence of both genders. This can be triggering for some readers. The love scenes are also explicit—steam level 4.

Why You Should Read: Looking for an epic romance with a male narrator? Look at this popular YA paranormal romance series full of mystery, magic, and memorable characters.
I also recommend this one for the Southern Gothic setting. When you finish, it’s well worth your time to check out the movie adaptation starring Emma Thompson as the villain.

Why You Should Read: Nominated for a 2022 Goodreads Choice Award, Belladonna stands out from other recent paranormal romances with a unique twist on the genre. It reminds me of the dark romance in The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, with Death as the romantic lead.
With a fabulous gothic setting, a mystery, and palpable chemistry, this is one series you won’t want to put down. However, some may not like that Death has known the main character since she was a baby.

Why You Should Read: I love the mix of genres in The Light at the Bottom of the World! From Sci-fi and dystopian to paranormal romance, London Shah created a diverse and immersive world I enjoyed visiting. With suspense and action, there’s also never a dull moment.
The romance isn’t the story’s main focus, but enjoyable, nonetheless. Not to mention, the monsters in this are top-notch. Overall, I enjoyed book one and plan on checking out book two soon.
Content Note: There is mild language, but it is a sweet and wholesome read—steam level 1.
#78: L.J. Smith books: The Secret Circle, Dark Visions, & The Vampire Diaries

Why You Should Read: L.J. Smith was the ultimate teen paranormal romance queen in the 90s. Her books are so much fun to read – some later became popular TV shows. The Secret Circle is my particular favorite. (Don’t read after book three because a ghostwriter took over.)

#79: The Morganville Vampire Series by Rachel Caine
Book Summary of Glass Houses (Book 1):

Why You Should Read: Read this if you love stories about ordinary girls discovering secret worlds of vampires. In this case, it is a college town with vampires.
While I haven’t read this series yet, it’s on my TBR list because it’s so popular. Sounds fun with suspense, romance, and action. It is recommended for fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Vampire Diaries.
Content Note: Book one has violence, language, and innuendo—steam level 2. As future books go on, it’s probably overall a 3.

Why You Should Read: Read for the fun premise! It’s basically a teen Ghost Whisperer with a paranormal romance from the author of The Princess Diaries.

I love that the heroine has such an extraordinary, dangerous power. While not a personal favorite, it’s an entertaining series.

#88: Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls #1) by Maggie Stiefvater

Why You Should Read: It is one of the best paranormal werewolf love stories available! As someone who doesn’t love werewolves (they can be too alpha for me), I highly enjoyed this series and even liked the romance.

#89: The Siren Series by Kiera Cass

Why You Should Read: Finding a paranormal romance about sirens is rare. Moreover, the mythology of the ocean is fantastic. And like other Kiera Cass books, this series is highly romantic and wholesome.

Great list I love some oof the 90s nostalgia, particularly the L.J. Smith. I don’t recommend the ghost-written stuff. Women of the Otherworld is good. There are some explicit scenes, but they’re easily skippable and don’t overwhelm the plot. The Anita Blake series was pretty good for the first few books, but it turned into erotica with minimal plotlines. I don’t recommend anything by Laurell K. Hamilton.
