All the Best Jane Austen Movies And Where to Watch Them

The ultimate list of every Jane Austen movie and show and where to watch them.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a Jane Austen fan in possession of a TV must be in want of Jane Austen movies to watch.

Well, look no further. After extensive research, I’ve compiled a list of almost every Jane Austen movie and show ever made, along with where to stream or watch each title.

Thankfully, numerous Jane Austen movies are available on various streaming services. However, not every movie or show is currently accessible to stream. I’ll let you know if a film is only available on DVD or not available at all.

There are plenty of Jane Austen movies and TV shows to watch, from faithful adaptations such as the iconic 1995 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth to modern-day retellings like Clueless.

I’ve also included adaptations and Jane Austen-inspired productions coming soon, from The Other Bennet Sister to the new adaptations of Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility.

So, whether you’re a curious viewer looking to dip your toes into Jane Austen’s books and movies for the first time or loyal Janeites ready to watch your favorite adaptation for the 50th time, I’ve got you covered. Plus, it’s the perfect time to celebrate Jane Austen’s 250th birthday by first reading her books (of course!) and then watching some lovely adaptations – or even movies about Ms. Austen herself.

RELATED: Top 16 Movies with Colin Firth as the Leading Man

For your viewing pleasure, I’ve included major adaptations of Jane Austen’s novels, documentaries, biopics, theater productions, web series, loose adaptations, movies about Jane Austen fans, and even Austenesque productions clearly borrowing from Austen.

So, if you love Jane Austen or are slightly interested, you’ve come to the right place!

What you won’t find in this article is a list of numerous Jane Austen adaptations that have been lost and will likely never be available to watch. IE, the 1960 adaptation of Persuasion that was deleted due to the BBC cleanout. I also left podcasts off the list.

The titles are organized alphabetically, so you can read through the entire list to find new Jane Austen movies and Jane Austen TV series to watch. Or you can jump to the movie/show you’re interested in seeing.

I’ve included reasons why you should consider checking out each adaptation. That said, even though I’ve seen most of these, I haven’t seen every production, so I may not always know if it is good (based on my subjective opinion).

To read more about Jane Austen’s books and other works, head to JASNA, JaneAusten.org, The Jane Austen Centre, Jane Austen’s House, or Wikipedia.

*IMPORTANT: Bookmark this page for where to watch Jane Austen movies, as I’ll update this page when I can. I’ll post the last date this post was updated below. That said, Jane Austen streaming availability changes daily, so I can’t guarantee availability for any adaptation. This list only includes availability in the United States.

I last updated this list in December 2025.

In addition to Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy and Renee Zellweger as Bridget Jones, Hugh Grant steals the film as the hilarious bad boy Daniel Cleaver.

Plus, not only did the author of the book, Helen Fielding, help write the script, but Andrew Davies (Pride and Prejudice, 1995) and Richard Curtis (Love Actually) co-wrote the screenplay as well.

Movie Clip: Hugh Grant and Colin Firth fighting over Bridget (Renee Zellweger) may be one of the funniest scenes in cinema. Warning: The clip below contains brief, strong language.

On the night before Christmas, a wistful Elizabeth hopes for a Christmas miracle to revive the festival, save the estate and rekindle her holiday romance.

Where to Watch: Rent/buy digitally and on DVD.

Why You Should Watch: JASNA connected this movie with Austen’s Sense and Sensibility. While tentative, it’s worth looking at – and it is an excellent, award-winning film. Why You Should Watch: Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeremy Northam shine onscreen together in this intelligent adaptation. Of all the Emma adaptations, I think this one best captures Jane Austen’s wit.

The Emma role is Gwyneth Paltrow at her best. And it’s true to the essence of Jane Austen’s novel. And Jeremy Northam, as Mr. Knightley, is divine. He has the flirty, Romantic-Hero stare down pat.

Since this is a limited series, there’s more time to explore Austen’s book. Plus, this is genuinely an excellent adaptation and my personal favorite.

Jane Austen & Anna Lefroy’s Sanditon 200 Years Later (Sanditon: The Musical)

Official Synopsis: In 1817 Jane Austen left an unfinished novel full of characters, issues and situations for posterity to finish sometime in the future. After she had inherited the manuscript in 1845 her niece Anna Lefroy added a continuation, similarly unfinished. In 2014 Chris Brindle put both fragments together and finished them as a play whilst also filming a documentary in Hampshire and Berkshire about the rivalry between niece Anna and nephew James Edward to honour and build the literary reputation of their late aunt.

To mark the bicentenary of the death of Austen and the writing of ‘Sanditon’ Chris wrote and filmed two versions of ‘Song For Jane Austen’ and then kept on writing songs for all the characters in the book. Gradually the Play became a Musical with assistance of the recording studio of guitarist David Edward Booth in Bedfield Suffolk, and the piano genius of Vicky Clubb in Colchester. Finally with the assistance of Angie Diggens the whole thing was reduced to a show that could be premiered on the small stage of the Studio at  ‘The Other Palace’ in Victoria, London on July 26 2019. This filmed version is the work of more genius from Steve Dorrington, Tristan Syrett and Roger Allen at Colchester film-makers Aura Films. About: Frances O’Connor, Jonny Lee Miller, Alessandro Nivola, Lindsay Duncan, Hugh Bonneville, and more star in this romantic period drama set in 1800s England.

Where to Watch: Paramount+, Kanopy, and Hoopla. Rent/Buy on Digital and DVD.

Why You Should Watch: Writer and Director Patricia Rozema brings a unique take to Austen’s story, capturing the wit, satire, and narrative voice sometimes missing from adaptations of Austen.

Some complain that Rozema combined the novel with elements of Jane Austen’s life. Personally, I find this adaptation to be brilliant and pure artistry. I just accept that it’s not quite the novel.

Hallmark Synopsis: Some six months after they first crossed verbal swords at a Washington D.C. dog show, schoolteacher Elizabeth Scott (Cindy Busby) and businessman/philanthropist Donovan Darcy (Ryan Paevey) are blissfully in love and newly engaged.

With Donovan in agreement, she looks forward to planning a small autumn wedding with the help of her mother and sister. After Donovan’s previously scornful Aunt Violet (Frances Fisher) makes a heartfelt apology for her past behavior, Elizabeth is glad to include her in the planning process.

As the weeks fly by and the arrangements for the wedding grow more elaborate, Elizabeth feels the burden of expectations she will face as Mrs. Darcy.

Worse still, Donovan himself is wrapped up in his work and increasingly unavailable to her. Reminded yet again of their tremendous differences in background and temperament, Elizabeth can’t help but ask herself: should she marry Mr. Darcy?

Where to Watch: Watch it on Hallmark+ and Hoopla, or buy it on Digital and DVD. Sometimes, it re-airs on the Hallmark Channel.

Why You Should Watch:  It’s a feel-good sequel to Unleashing Mr. Darcy and is Hallmark meets Pride and Prejudice in style, so if you’re in the mood for light-hearted entertainment, this is a good choice.

If you love Hallmark movies, you’ll likely enjoy this one.

Miss Austen (2025)

Cassandra Austen (Keeley Hawes) in Miss Austen on PBS
Cassandra Austen (Keeley Hawes). Photo Courtesy of WGBH/PBS.

Official Plot Description:

There are few things more fascinating or enduring than a real-life mystery. Miss Austen takes one of the most prominent literary mysteries in history – Cassandra Austen notoriously burning her famous sister Jane’s letters – and reimagines it as a fascinating, witty and heart-breaking story of sisterly love, while creating in Cassandra a character as captivating as any Austen heroine.

In Miss Austen, the drama begins in 1830, many years after Jane has died. Cassandra rushes to visit Isabella, the niece of her long-dead fiancé, who is about to lose her home following her father’s death. Cassandra is ostensibly there to help Isabella, but her real motive is to find a hidden bundle of private letters which, in the wrong hands, she fears could destroy Jane’s reputation.

On discovering them, Cassandra is overwhelmed as she is transported back to her youth. In flashback, we meet Young Cassy and Jane as they navigate the romantic infatuations, family feuds and dashed hopes which shaped their lives, and laid the foundations for Jane’s unforgettable stories. Cassandra’s re-evaluation of her past eventually leads her to find a way to guide Isabella towards the path of true happiness.

Where to Watch: You can stream it on the PBS app and on the PBS Masterpiece Amazon Channel. You can also buy it digitally and on DVD.

Why You Should Watch: The miniseries is based on the bestselling historical fiction novel by Gill Hornby. Keeley Hawes stars in this fabulous, emotional series.

Modern Austen (In Development)

About: The CW is producing a new one-hour anthology series in which each season adapts a different Jane Austen novel, starting with Pride and Prejudice. These will be contemporary adaptations.

Eleanor Burgess (Perry Mason), a playwright and screenwriter, will write the series. I will update this as more details are announced. It’s also possible that the series never gets made. As time goes by, that becomes more likely. But it’s still listed as in production, so crossing fingers!

Modern Persuasion (2020)

Modern Persuasion poster

Official Synopsis: A modern telling of Jane Austen’s “Persuasion.” Wren Cosgrove is a happy, single, and self-confessed workaholic who, after rising to the top of the corporate ladder, finds herself coming home every night to her cat. When her firm is hired by Owen Jasper, “the man who got away,” long-lost feelings are stirred, giving Wren a second chance at true love.

Where to Watch: Stream it on Prime Video, Roku, and Hoopla. Rent and buy digitally and on DVD.

Why You Should Watch: While it’s not the best modern Jane Austen adaptation, it’s overall a cute rom-com, and Alicia Witt shines in the role.

Mr. Malcolm’s List (2022)

Mr Malcolm's List poster

Official Synopsis: When she fails to meet an item on his list of requirements for a bride, Julia Thistlewaite (Zawe Ashton) is jilted by London’s most eligible bachelor, Mr. Malcolm (Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù). Feeling humiliated and determined to exact revenge, she convinces her friend Selina Dalton (Freida Pinto) to play the role of his ideal match. Soon, Mr. Malcolm wonders whether he’s found the perfect woman…or the perfect hoax.

Where to Watch: Stream it on Kanopy, Plex, and Hoopla or rent/buy it digitally and on DVD.

Why You Should Watch: Okay, so this isn’t based on Jane Austen. It is, however, about as Austenesque as a movie can get! It’s based on the novel by Suzanne Allain, and the story purposely infuses elements of Jane Austen’s books (notably Pride and Prejudice and Emma) into the plot and characters. It’s charming and very funny.

Northanger Abbey (1986)

About: Katharine Schlesinger and Peter Firth star in this melodramatic BBC adaptation of Jane Austen’s gothic novel about the young Catherine Norland as she falls in love with Henry Tilney.

Where to Watch: BritBox, Prime Video, Roku, and on Digital and DVD.

Why You Should Watch: This is a very strange adaptation – but it’s still worth giving a chance. Read our review.

Northanger Abbey (2007)

northanger abbey poster

About: Felicity Jones (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) portrays Catherine Morland in Jane Austen’s gothic parody.

Where to Watch: Hoopla and Kanopy. Buy on digital and DVD.

Why You Should Watch: Because it’s the best adaptation of Northanger Abbey so far. My only complaint about this adaptation is that it’s too short! A young Felicity Jones stars as Catherine, and the perfectly cast JJ Feild steals the hearts of women everywhere with his flirty and fun Mr. Tilney.

While brief, this adaptation captures the essence of Austen’s gothic romance. You can also watch a young Carey Mulligan play a key role.

Northbound (2015)

The Other Bennet Sister (2026)

the other bennet sister book cover

Official Description:The Other Bennet Sister is a fresh spin around the ballroom for one of Jane Austen’s most unassuming characters: Mary Bennet – the seemingly unremarkable and overlooked middle sister in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.  The series takes as its premise that – when it comes to the Bennet sisters – while we dream of being Lizzy, in reality, most of us are more like Mary…

Unlike her sisters, Mary isn’t your typical period drama heroine. She is awkward, anxious, preachy, full of facts, a terrible singer… overlooked by her mother and seemingly destined to an empty dance card for the rest of her life…until Mary takes matters into her own hands.

The Other Bennet Sister gives Mary Bennet the epic love story nobody predicted for her, taking her from her family home in Meryton to the soirees of Regency London and the peaks and vales of the Lake District –  all in search of independence, romance and, most elusive of all, self-love and acceptance.”

Where to Watch: It is a co-production between the BBC and Bad Wolf and will premiere in Spring 2026 on Britbox.

Why You Should Watch: It’s based on the bestselling novel by Janice Hadlow. And with the BBC and Bad Wolf in charge of the production, it’s likely to be great! Plus, the announced cast is fantastic.

Paging Mr. Darcy (2024)

Paging Mr Darcy poster

Where to Watch: Stream on Hallmark+ and Hoopla or buy digitally and on DVD.

Why You Should Watch: This was my favorite of the Jane Austen Loveuary Hallmark films of 2024. It’s an adorable rom-com with likable leads and a fun, witty script.

About: Sally Hawkins and Rupert Penry-Jones star in this romantic adaptation.

Where to Watch: It can be streamed on Prime Video (and Prime Video free with ads), BritBox, Kanopy, Passionflix Amazon Channel, and Roku or bought on DVD.

Why You Should Watch: While some complain about the now-famous scene of Anne running through Bath, I’ve come to love this emotional adaptation. Plus, Rupert Penry Jones as Captain Wentworth is altogether swoony.

Oscar-nominated actress Sally Hawkins, as Anne Elliot, also demonstrates her depth as an actress in this role.

Pride (In Development)

But when the wealthy Darcy family moves in next door, Zuri’s disdain for the arrogant Darius Darcy turns into an unexpected connection that forces her to reconsider everything she thought she knew about pride, prejudice and home.”

Sounds promising!

About: The Oscar-winning adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel about five sisters in 19th-century England. This film revolutionized Jane Austen movies.

Where to Watch: Watch TCM app (you need access to cable). Rent/Buy on Digital and DVD.

Where to Watch: BritBox and Roku. Buy on DVD.

Pride and Prejudice a latter day comedy poster

About: A contemporary adaptation set in Provo, Utah.

Where to Watch: Prime Video (plus free with ads), Roku, Hoopla, Freevee, and Plex. Rent/buy on digital and DVD.

Why You Should Watch: While flawed, it’s still worth watching for the romance, a hilarious Mr. Collins interpretation (excellent satire), and an attractive Mr. Darcy.

It’s cute and fun, and the two leads have good chemistry. If you like wacky humor, you might enjoy this modern-day adaptation.

On a fun note, if you went to high school or college around this time, you’ll recognize the authentic fashion, which is fun! Not to mention, aspiring young writers will relate to Elizabeth Bennet.

Pride and Prejudice (2005)

Pride and Prejudice 2005 poster

About: Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen star in this Oscar-nominated adaptation.

Where to Watch: Peacock and Roku. Rent/buy on digital and DVD.

Why You Should Watch: While the debate of which adaptation is the best (this one or the ’95 version) rages on, I choose to love them equally for different reasons. This adaptation uses artistic cinematography, a gorgeous score, color schemes, and other elements to tell the story visually.

On the other hand, the ’95 miniseries focuses on presenting a close reading of Jane Austen’s novel. Both visions work. So, watch this one to appreciate Joe Wright’s visual artistry.

You should also watch because Mr. Darcy walking toward Elizabeth at sunrise may make your heart skip a beat.

The show is a lavish Regency era drama with gorgeous period detail and packed with considerable romance and intrigue.

Where to Watch: PBS app, PBS Masterpiece Amazon Channel. Buy on digital and DVD.

Why You Should Watch: While this Jane Austen-inspired adaptation has been polarizing, it is, overall, a fantastic romantic period drama series. All three seasons are now available. I prefer the first season the most, which had Andrew Davies penning the scripts.

About: Irene Richard and Tracey Childs star as Elinor and Marianne Dashwood in this BBC production.

Why You Should Watch: While the adaptation was a bit too literal and lacking in subtlety for my taste, it follows the book closely. Many love this classic miniseries.

Why You Should Watch: It’s an overall gem and one of the best Jane Austen adaptations ever made. Plus, Alan Rickman gives a perfect performance as Colonel Brandon.

Sense and Sensibility (2008)

Where to Watch: Hulu, BritBox, Prime Video (free with ads), Peacock, Roku, and Pluto TV. You can also buy it digitally or on DVD.

Why You Should Watch: This is a fantastic adaptation of the book with a talented cast. While it’s not as “perfect” as the ’95 adaptation with Emma Thompson (in my opinion, of course), this miniseries is about as good as a Jane Austen adaptation can get.

Also, it has Dan Stevens from Downton Abbey, and he definitely puts those blue eyes to good use. The entire cast, including Hattie Morahan and Dominic Cooper, gives outstanding performances. There’s also a fun duel between Colonel Brandon and Willoughby.

Why You Should Watch: You might ask, “What does Twilight have to do with Jane Austen?” Well, the Jane Austen Society argues that the first Twilight book is based loosely on the characters and events in Pride and Prejudice. You can decide for yourself if you agree. That said, Twilight as a standalone film is pretty entertaining if you enjoy paranormal romance.
