Man Candy – 26 of the Most Handsome Classic Film Actors

These are a few of the most handsome actors from the Golden Age of Hollywood.

MOST HANDSOME OLD HOLLYWOOD ACTORS

Most people would agree that looks shouldn’t matter in how we’re perceived and judged. Our actions and behavior are a much better reflection of our character and beauty.

However, Hollywood has long been a place and an industry where appearances are partially responsible for success.

Talent, of course, is the main factor, but often the most successful actors are also very handsome. It’s often a combination of both talent and looks which attract an audience and turn viewers into fans.

Contemporary actors are not the first to garner attention for their looks. Old movie actors of Hollywood’s Golden Age also experienced this phenomenon.

In fact, many of them were often mobbed any time they appeared in public and required police escorts and protection. And just like now, female fans drooled over their favorites.

Today, I’m sharing with you a list of a few of the most handsome Old Hollywood actors whose onscreen charisma made us swoon.

For the purposes of this list, I’ve only chosen actors who began their careers before 1965. This is often considered a cut-off point in defining the classic film era.

  1. Fun list. Although, I will have to add Sidney Poitier, Marlon Brando, Jimmy Stewart, Leslie Howard, Orson Welles, Michel Landon (more TV than film), William Shatner, Christopher Plummer, John Peppard…

  2. LOVE this list, and agree with every single one, though I kind of wish it had been stretched to 27 so as to include Howard Keel!

    • I would add Anthony Quinn. Unusual I know, but I fell in love with him when I watched Guns of Navarone. In Black Orchid he’s so simple (so opposite to Cary Grant). I thought his character was absolutely darling!

  3. Marlon Brando, Jimmy Stewart, Alain Delon (Google him), Rudolph Valentino, Robert Montgomery and Robert Mitchum. Also, Ramon Navarro. Very good list. However, the above actors definitely need to be included.

  4. Very interesting, I am pretty well-read on early Hollywood and I’d never heard of Charles Farrell. Thanks for the info!

In addition to hotties in the list and in previous comments I’d add Robert Montgomery, Fredric March, Joseph Cotten, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Charlie Chaplin, James Cagney, William Haines, Peter O’Toole, Richard Burton, Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, Desi Arnaz, Franchot Tone, Sidney Poitier, Fred McMurray, and Sam Waterston.

    • I would add Humphrey Bogart (very handsome in his 20s and 30s) also Phillip Holmes, Gene Raymond, William Powell, Spencer Tracy, Robert Mitchum, Harry Belafonte, Tony Curtis

  5. The only man on this list that I really care anything about is McQueen. He’s my # 1 favorite actor and the handsomest man in my book. McQueen was my biggest crush from the time I was 12 and saw a movie clip of The Great Escape. McQueen is the rugged classic. He’d be rolling over in his grave if he knew you listed his friend James Garner before him. Lol. He actually became a Christian before he died. McQueen is my hero.

  6. No Peter O’Toole! Best actor-stage and screen, charisma, maybe most intelligent. Invalidates list!

Richard Burton, so many true actors…
    British and French…

    • I agree with you but I think she listed Hollywood ones. He mostly acted in French cinema. Those eyes are incredible. Still great looking at his age now.

  7. There could have been more inclusions
on the list of past handsome actors,
but omitting Ramon Novarro, on the
    present list—-now that’s a biggy.

  8. You forgot – Michael Landon, Pernell Roberts, Guy Williams, Liam Neeson,
Barry Gibb, Tom Selleck, James Darren, Sooooooooo many more!
