Coven Academy Release Date & Where to Watch
The supernatural series premiered on Freeform on October 1, 2026, and then all episodes became available on Disney+ and Hulu the next day on October 2, 2026.
To build buzz, Disney also released the first chapter on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, gaining more than 30 million views!
You can currently watch the teen fantasy series as ten episodes on Freeform and Freeform on Demand or broken up into 21 episodes on Disney+ and Hulu in their experimental short-form format (as a way of catching the younger audience’s interest).
You can also watch the series (in the original 10-episode format) by buying the season digitally on Prime Video and Apple TV.
The Set Up & Story
The story begins when NYC teenager Briar Roberts arrives at her new school, Crescent Veil Academy, in New Orleans (after her mother’s tragic passing), only to discover that she’s a witch and that this new school is actually a magical boarding school for witches and warlocks as they learn to hone their magic. She also learns that her mother attended the school and left behind the “witch” life for mysterious reasons many years earlier.
As Briar eases into her new life as a budding witch with telekinetic and other powers, she develops close friendships with two other powerful teenage witches as they work on becoming a coven. Together, the three young women investigate Briar’s mother’s mysterious passing while Briar also navigates a tricky love triangle between a warlock and a vampire. Not to mention a dark fate looming over the school that could change everything.
Coven Academy Cast
As far as talent goes, Coven Academy does not fall short – with a special treat for Millennials and Gen X. So, no, you do not have to be a tween or teen to watch and enjoy this show! The adult cast and old-school appeal are sure to attract adult viewers as well as younger viewers.
Malina Pauli Weissman (A Series of Unfortunate Events) takes the lead as Briar Roberts, a smart and sarcastic New Yorker who will do anything to find out what happened to her mother. She also finds herself falling into a forbidden love triangle between a vampire and a warlock while developing new friendships with her potential coven.
The newer actress (who is also an international model), Jordan Leftwich, portrays Sasha, an empathetic witch with the ability to read and control minds. While hesitant and mistrusting at first, she develops a deep bond with Briar.
The third in the potential coven is Ora Duplass (Their Town) as Tegan, an optimistic and loyal witch with the ability to bend time. She’s a sweet girl who will do anything for her friends.
Malachi Barton (Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires) plays Jake, a young warlock drawn to dark magic and Briar. He also develops a mentor relationship with his teacher, Mr. Cole.

Louis Thresher (Boarders) portrays Ollie, a newly turned vampire who falls for Briar while also fighting against his darker instincts. Both Ollie and Jake bring the much-needed brooding to the paranormal romance show.
The main adult characters in the series include Tiffani Thiessen (Saved by the Bell, White Collar) as Miss Graves, the kind, confident, and fierce headmistress of Crescent Veil Academy who has some secrets of her own.
Then there’s Devon Sawa (Casper, Chucky, Hacks) as Mr. Cole, an enigmatic teacher and warlock who uses dark magic while attempting to hide it from his fellow witches and warlocks. Also, could there be some romance between Mr. Cole and Miss Graves?
Other recurring actors include Swayam ‘Sway’ Bhatia as McKenna, Keegan Connor Tracy as Tamora, Brendon Tremblay as Alexander, BJ Harrison as Agnes, Nathaniel McIntyre as Teese, and Tahmoh Penikett in a mysterious role.
Coven Academy Review
First impressions: Is Coven Academy completely derivative of fantasy TV shows, books, and romantic vampire series that have come before and full of all the familiar tropes without much that’s original? Yes. And is it just like reading an L.J. Smith novel (such as The Secret Circle, Vampire Diaries books, Dark Visions) from the 90s with a love triangle and all? Also, yes.
But in my view, that’s actually a good thing. It’s comforting to watch a series that reminds you of something you would have loved when you were a tween and a teen.
It’s not as mature as shows like Charmed, Buffy, or The Vampire Diaries (it’s safe for tweens), but it’s also not as young as many Disney tween fantasy shows that have come before – hence why it premiered on Freeform before Disney+.
Coven Academy has an appeal for numerous ages – including us adults who may have had a crush on Devon Sawa in Casper or loved Tiffani Thiessen from her Saved by the Bell days. They both play faculty who may or may not be up to no good… And yes, that is the main reason I watched! There is a particular lack of these supernatural/paranormal romance and fantasy shows out there right now. And every generation deserves their romantic witches and vampire shows!

We need more Roswells and Buffys and shows about witches and vampires that teens and adults can both enjoy. There aren’t many of them anymore, which is a real shame. So, even if imperfect (the short-form style can be jarring when it comes to pacing, the world-building could be stronger, as could the school aspect – Hogwarts this is not), it’s worth watching. Imperfections can be worked on! Some of the cheese factor can be toned down. The writers can see what worked and what didn’t and expand upon that in season 2.
The Romance
When it comes to the romance angle, teen viewers are bound to be torn between the handsome and magnetic Ollie, a vampire, and Jake, a well-meaning young warlock dabbling in dark magic.
They both have their appeal, and it’s easy to imagine the audience will develop some “shipping” camps over who Briar should ultimately choose.
It’s all very cute and romantic and has those feelings of first love and crushes.
There also is a connection between Tegan and another witch, McKenna (Sway Bhatia), who, at first, doesn’t seem very friendly, with some obvious history between them.
And then there’s Miss Graves and Mr. Cole. Could there be something there? I can’t say without giving away some major spoilers. But I was definitely interested in their chemistry.
Overall Thoughts
All in all, Coven Academy is quite entertaining and is a nice soft introduction for tweens and teens looking to dip their toe in the paranormal romance/fantasy genre. And it’s also a nostalgic throwback for adults looking to remember the days when you’d check out that sensation book from the library and read it all night long. Or even watch that exciting teen fantasy show on the WB or CW and swoon over immortal vampires, brooding aliens, and Byronic warlocks.
Coven Academy captures that feeling, even if it isn’t in the same league as those gold standards. It also gets better and better with each episode. Plus, it has stylish costumes, atmospheric and magical production design enhanced by the New Orleans setting (will definitely give you some of The Originals vibes), and an all-around talented cast and crew.
If you like Legacies, Harry Potter, Charmed (lots of nods), The Vampire Diaries, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, check it out!
Content Note: TV-PG for mild fantasy violence and teen romantic angst.
Coven Academy Season 2 News
On October 26, 2026, Disney announced that Coven Academy has been renewed for season 2! Great news. And I can’t wait to see what happens next, as it ends on a pretty big cliffhanger, even if the season’s arc concludes nicely.
