The Show: Once Upon a Time

The Pairing: Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison) and Captain Hook aka Killian Jones (Colin O’Donoghue)

The Episode: Season 3, Episode 5, “Good Form”

The Moment: The kiss between Emma and Hook.

After the disastrous ending of the romantic pairing of Emma and Sheriff Graham, I wasn’t sure the show could redeem itself in terms of a romance for Emma.  The writers really messed up with that one. He was perfect! *sigh* Then the writers paraded a slew of possibilities in front of us without committing to one man. That was beyond annoying. After they decided to turn Pinnochio back into a boy and take him off the potentials list I wanted to shout, “Make up your mind ABC!” I mean, really, turning one of the PLIs (potential love interest) into a small child is just plain creepy. But, finally, they buckled up and gave us the delicious Colin O’Donoghue in the role of Captain Hook as a serious potential love interest.

He’s got the looks, the accent, and the attitude to certainly keep me interested. However, for a while it seemed as if they were waffling back and forth on whether to commit to him as well. One minute he was a PLI, then the next he wasn’t. For a while I thought he was just yet another man ABC had decided to parade before it’s audience before chucking him, as they’d already done with so many handsome specimens.

But then this season the flirtatious scenes between him and Emma began to increase, and so did my hope.

Thus ensued the witty banter, the deep soulful moments, and all sorts of shenanigans. Emma and Hook have a great kinship based on their mutual understanding of each other. Both have less than savory pasts, and that draws them together in a way that none of the other male characters on Once Upon a Time have been able to claim. I enjoy the edge that the two characters balance upon with each other. There’s an element of danger in their pairing that makes it exciting.

As this season has progressed, however, that has been slowly pushed to the side to make way for their romantic entanglement. Emma has come to slowly trust Hook more and more as he struggles to prove that he is not just a villainous pirate. In this episode we learned of Hook’s respectable past as a sailor for the royal navy before he became a pirate. He also turned down Pan’s tempting offer and chose instead to save David. And so, here is where our Romantic Moment of the Week enters the picture.

After heroically saving Emma’s father, Prince Charming, Hook hints that he wants more than a simple “thank you” for his troubles.

“You really save his life?”

“Does that surprise you?”

“Well, you and David aren’t exactly, how do you say it, mates.”

“Doesn’t mean I’d leave your father to perish on this island.”

“Thank you.”

“Well perhaps gratitude is in order now.”

“Yeah, that’s what the thank you was for.”

“Hmm, is that all your father’s life is worth to you?”

“Please, you couldn’t handle it.”

“Perhaps you’re the one who couldn’t handle it.”

Ta da! And there is the big kiss! Wow, folks. That one was a doozy! It definitely knocked me off my feet. Of course, our dear Emma couldn’t possibly leave it at that. She’s always got to have the last word.

“That was…”

“a one time thing.”

About Rebecca Lane

Rebecca Lane grew up in the hot desert landscape of Tucson, Arizona where she decided early on she wanted to write, if only to mentally escape her blistering surroundings. She has always been enamored of the arts and literature. As a child she often wrote short stories, and rewrote the endings of novels that she simply could not abide. She received her Undergraduate degree from Sarah Lawrence College in New York, where she was lucky enough to also spend a year studying at Oxford University. While she began her journey dreaming of the day she would sing opera in a large Manhattan theater, she found in the end she could not stand waitressing and simply could not give up books and her hopes of someday writing them. She is currently working as a freelance writer/editor and earning her Masters in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University.

  1. I loved their kiss and I’ve been an Emma/Hook fan for awhile. Just wish they weren’t still dangling Neal out there. I think Emma and Hook have much better chemistry
