The 50 Best Paranormal Romance Movies & TV Shows to Watch on Amazon Prime (2018)

I’ve always had a soft spot for paranormal romance movies and TV Shows. Maybe it was my numerous re-readings of L.J. Smith’s The Secret Circle as a kid. Or maybe it’s my love for Dark Romanticism and everything Gothic with Byronic monsters! Still, I’ve found over the years that there’s always plenty of conversations about paranormal romance/urban fantasy books but hardly anyone ever talks about the movies and shows – even though they’re popular.

The 50 Best Paranormal Romance Movies & TV Shows to Watch on Amazon Prime (2018)

That’s where I come in! I’ve decided to put together a well-researched list of the best paranormal romance movies and shows on Amazon Prime right now.

Now, paranormal romance can include elements of the supernatural such as witches, vampires, ghosts, werewolves, psychics, magic, mythological creatures, superhuman abilities, fairies, immortals, and even time travel. For this list, I’m also including the urban fantasy genre which is closely related to the paranormal romance genre. Urban fantasy typically includes an urban setting, crime, and elements of paranormal romance within the story.

For a deeper description of paranormal romance, see my other list: 150 of the Best Gothic & Paranormal Romance Period Dramas. I should also clarify that while some of these choices below are paranormal romance movies and TV Shows, others just include major paranormal romantic subplots.

50 Best Paranormal Romance Movies & TV Shows On Amazon Prime

(in alphabetical order)

#1 The 10th Kingdom (2000)

The 10th Kingdom; The 50 Best Paranormal Romance Movies & TV Shows to Watch on Amazon Prime (2018)
Virginia and Wolf. Photo: Hallmark Entertainment

Amazon Synopsis: Virginia and Tony, a father and daughter living in Manhattan, find themselves in a parallel universe where Snow White, Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood are struggling to maintain order. Their kingdoms have been fragmented by trolls, giants and goblins.

Why You Should Watch: Because it’s good, old-fashioned fun! There’s a cute romance between Virginia and Wolf (half human, half wolf) too which adds a touch of paranormal romance on top of the fairy tale stories.

Content Note: NR but feels TV-PG for language and some threatening situations.

#2 A Ghost Story (2017)

A Ghost Story; The 50 Best Paranormal Romance Movies & TV Shows to Watch on Amazon Prime (2018)
Photo: A24

Amazon Synopsis: A recently deceased, white-sheeted ghost (Casey Affleck) returns home to connect with his beloved wife once more in this cosmic exploration of time, love, and the human desire for meaning and connection.

Why You Should Watch: This is a slow-moving film. But if you enjoy artsy paranormal romances, then this movie’s for you!

Content Note: Rated R for brief language and a disturbing image.

#3 A Gifted Man (2011)

A Gifted Man; The 50 Best Paranormal Romance Movies & TV Shows to Watch on Amazon Prime (2018)
Photo: CBS

Amazon Synopsis: A GIFTED MAN is a drama about a brilliant, charismatic surgeon whose life changes forever when his deceased ex-wife begins teaching him the meaning of life from the “hereafter.”

Why You Should Watch: Because it stars Patrick Wilson and Jennifer Ehle! However, don’t go in expecting much of a romance between them. The building romance is between Michael (Wilson) and another Doctor who’s still alive played by Rachelle Lafevre (Twilight).

Content Note: TV-PG

#4 Awaken (2012)

Awaken; The 50 Best Paranormal Romance Movies & TV Shows to Watch on Amazon Prime (2018)

Amazon Synopsis: The only thing that stands in the way of Alex and Rachel’s perfect, serendipitous relationship is that she has recently passed away.

Why You Should Watch: I haven’t seen this movie but the trailer looks promising. It looks like a sweet paranormal romance about dreams.

Content Note: NR; Content Unclear

#5 Battlestar Galactica (2004)

Battlestar Galactica; The 50 Best Paranormal Romance Movies & TV Shows to Watch on Amazon Prime (2018)
Photo: NBC Universal

Amazon Synopsis: “Battlestar Galactica” is an intriguing take on the classic adventure of a ragtag fleet of humans, the sole survivors of a devastating nuclear attack by the robot Cylons. Faced with an un-winnable battle against a deadly enemy, they are forced to flee under the protection of their one remaining warship, the outdated Battlestar Galactica. Pursued by the Cylons-some of whom have now taken human form-Commander Adama (Olmos) and President Roslin (McDonnell) lead these last remnants of humanity in search of a new home – a planet called Earth.

Why You Should Watch: SPOILERS. Because this is one of the best shows of all time. But why did I include it on a paranormal romance list, you might ask? Yes, the series appears to be a full-on sci-fi space opera. And it mostly is. However, the series also includes angels. Angels with romantic stories! I’d argue the Cylon/human romances also border on paranormal romance territory.

Content Note: TV-14 for violence, language, and sexuality.

#6 Beastly (2011)

Beastly; The 50 Best Paranormal Romance Movies & TV Shows to Watch on Amazon Prime (2018)
Photo: CBS Films

Amazon Synopsis: Spoiled, shallow high school student Kyle (Alex Pettyfer) is cursed by classmate Kendra (Mary-Kate Olsen), a witch masquerading as a student. She transforms him into someone as unattractive on the outside as he is on the inside. Now he has one year to convince an unassuming classmate, Lindy (Vanessa Hudgens), to see past his surface and love him, or he’ll remain ‘beastly’ forever.

Why You Should Watch: While not the best film of all time, it’s still a fun take on the Beauty and the Beast story.

Content Note: PG-13 for language and brief violence.

#7 Beautiful Accident (2017)

Beautiful Accident; The 50 Best Paranormal Romance Movies & TV Shows to Watch on Amazon Prime (2018)

Amazon Synopsis: Due to a clerical error in the afterlife, a high-powered lawyer dies before her time and must live out another week – except this time, in the body of a housewife.

Why You Should Watch: If you enjoy movies or shows like Drop Dead Diva then this Chinese film might be a great choice!

Content Note: NR; Content Unclear

#8 Beauty and the Beast (1987)

beauty and the beast 1987; The 50 Best Paranormal Romance Movies & TV Shows to Watch on Amazon Prime (2018)
Photo: CBS

Amazon Synopsis: Creator Ron Koslow updates a classic fairy tale and places it in a modern and urban environment. Assistant District Attorney Catherine Chandler learns she has a protector watching out for her as she sets out to clear the New York City streets of its dangerous criminals. Turns out her “guardian angel” is a kind-hearted beast named Vincent, who lives in labyrinthine tunnels beneath the city.

Why You Should Watch: If you’re a Moonlight fan like me, you’ll be happy to know that this urban fantasy series was created by Ron Koslow, one of the main creators of Moonlight! Beyond that, this is a fabulous retelling of Beauty and the Beast and includes an amazing performance from Ron Perlman.

Content Note: Not rated but is typically TV-PG or TV-14 at most.

#9 Being Erica (2009)

Being Erica; The 50 Best Paranormal Romance Movies & TV Shows to Watch on Amazon Prime (2018)

Amazon Synopsis: Erica has the chance of a lifetime. After a series of mishaps, she finds herself in the hospital where she meets the mysterious therapist Dr. Tom, who issues Erica a challenge; if she wants to fix her life he can help, but once she’s committed, she can’t back out. Desperate, Erica accepts his terms, and finds herself flung back into her own past. Can she alter her past and transform her present?

Why You Should Watch: Being Erica has fantastic writing, characterization, and romance. However, it’s the Kai/Erica time travel romance (mostly in season 2) that steals the show! (That and her father/daughter relationship with her therapist, Dr. Tom which will likely move you to tears.)

Content Note: The show is rated TV-PG on Amazon. But many episodes should be TV-14 for language and sexuality. A couple of episodes should be TV-MA.

#10 Being Human U.K. (2009)

Mitchell and Annie in Being Human; The 50 Best Paranormal Romance Movies & TV Shows to Watch on Amazon Prime (2018)
Mitchell and Annie from Being Human UK. Photo: BBC

Amazon Synopsis: Deciding to turn over a new leaf, a group of friends who also happen to be vampires and werewolves move into a house together, only to find that it is haunted by ghosts of people who have been killed under mysterious circumstances. As they deal with the challenges of being supernatural creatures, their desire to be human bonds them. A BBC series.

Why You Should Watch: For one, this fabulously written series stars Poldark‘s Aidan Turner as a swoony Byronic vampire. If that’s not enough, his romance with Annie will steal your heart. And then on top of that, the characters and stories are all fantastic.

Content Note: Depending on the episode it could be TV-14 or TV-MA for language (the strongest use of language is in season 2), violence, and sexuality.

#11 Beyond Tomorrow (1940)

Beyond Tomorrow; The 50 Best Paranormal Romance Movies & TV Shows to Watch on Amazon Prime (2018)

Amazon Synopsis: In this charming fantasy, three wealthy old friends find themselves without company on Christmas Eve.

Why You Should Watch: Despite the unclear synopsis, this is actually a sentimental Holiday classic about three ghosts who try to get a young couple together. A good choice for fans of classic Christmas movies.

Content Note: TV-G

#12 BrainDead (2016)

laurel and gareth braindead; The 50 Best Paranormal Romance Movies & TV Shows to Watch on Amazon Prime (2018)
Photo: CBS

Amazon Synopsis: BrainDead is a comic-thriller set in the world of Washington, D.C., politics that follows Laurel, a young, fresh-faced Hill staffer who discovers two things: the government has stopped working, and bugs are eating the brains of Congress members and Hill staffers.

Why You Should Watch: From the writers of The Good Wife, the satire on this “zombie” show is hilarious. However, the romance between the two main characters, Laurel and Gareth, is also fantastic.

Content Note: TV-14 for violence, language, and sensuality.

#13 Dark Shadows (1966)

Dark Shadows; The 50 Best Paranormal Romance Movies & TV Shows to Watch on Amazon Prime (2018)
Photo: ABC

Amazon Synopsis: With its alluring tales of gothic mystery and supernatural intrigue, Dark Shadows became the most popular daytime series of all time during its run on ABC from 1966-71. Much like the show’s character Barnabas Collins, a guilt-ridden vampire released from his chained coffin after nearly 200 years, Dark Shadows retains an immortality that time steadfastly fails to erode.

Why You Should Watch: It’s a vampire classic for a reason. And yes, there is some romance!

Content Note: TV-PG

#14 Dead Again (1991)Dead Again; The 50 Best Paranormal Romance Movies & TV Shows to Watch on Amazon Prime (2018)

Amazon Synopsis: Mike is an L.A. gumshoe with a knack for tracking down missing persons. But he doesn’t have a clue when he’s hired to help an amnesia victim tormented by blood-curdling nightmares. Then a hypnotist leads Church to a startling discovery.

Why You Should Watch: This romantic murder mystery is all about reincarnation (hence the paranormal aspect) and stars two acting greats: Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson.

Content Note: Rated R for violence (there are a couple of disturbing scenes), sensuality, and strong language.

#15 Detective Anna (2016)

Detective Anna; The 50 Best Paranormal Romance Movies & TV Shows to Watch on Amazon Prime (2018)

Amazon Synopsis: Nineteen-year-old Anna, living at the end of the nineteenth century in the town of Zatonsk, unexpectedly discovers that she possesses supernatural powers. The spirits of the dead literally haunt her, begging for help. Aided by her visions, Anna manages to investigate and solve a number of mysterious crimes which have baffled the police.

Why You Should Watch: This Russan urban fantasy series sounds fabulous! I haven’t seen it yet but I hear the romance is excellent.

Content Note: NR; Content unclear.

#16 Doctor Who (2005)

Doctor and Rose in Doctor Who; The 50 Best Paranormal Romance Movies & TV Shows to Watch on Amazon Prime (2018)
Photo: BBC

Amazon Synopsis (for season 1): Christopher Eccleston’s Doctor is wise and funny, cheeky and brave. A loner, his detached logic gives him a vital edge when the world’s in danger. But when it comes to relationships, he can be found wanting. That’s why he needs Rose. From the moment they meet, the Doctor and Rose are soulmates. With nothing to hold Rose back (neither her overbearing mum nor her hapless boyfriend), she chooses the Doctor and his promise of fantastic adventures across the universe. And he doesn’t let her down…

Why You Should Watch: If you’ve yet to see Doctor Who, you’ll definitely want to watch! Personally, my favorite seasons are 1-4 of the 2005 continuation under Russell T. Davies because he adds in many paranormal romance/urban fantasy elements into the series. The romance between the Doctor (an alien) and Rose is EPIC. Plus, there’s quite a bit of time travel.

Content Note: TV-PG

#17 Down to Earth (1947)

Down to earth; The 50 Best Paranormal Romance Movies & TV Shows to Watch on Amazon Prime (2018)

Amazon Synopsis: Horrified at how producer Danny Miller’s (Larry Parks) new Broadway show trivializes her and her fellow goddesses, Terpsichore (Rita Hayworth), the Greek Muse of the Dance, heads for Earth to stop him. After a successful audition, she is cast in the musical’s lead. Smitten with his new star, Danny agrees to make his production into a more serious and dignified work of art.

Why You Should Watch: It’s a fun classic movie musical with a unique story. Plus, Rita Hayworth is marvelous as always.

Portland homicide Detective Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli) discovers he is descended from an elite line of criminal profilers known as “Grimms,” charged with keeping balance between humanity and the mythological creatures of the world. As he tries to hide the dangers of his new found calling from his fiancé, Juliette Silverton, (Bitsie Tulloch), and his partner, Hank Griffin (Russell Hornsby), he becomes ever more entrenched in the ancient rivalries and alliances of the Grimm world. With help from his confidant, Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell), a reformed Grimm creature himself, Nick must navigate through the forces of a larger-than-life mythology, facing off with Hexenbiests, Blutbads and all manner of ancient evils, including royal lines dating back to the original profilers themselves, The Grimm Brothers. Reggie Lee and Sasha Roiz also star.

Why You Should Watch:  Grimm is one of the best urban fantasy series to ever air. While the romances with Nick could have been a little bit better, overall, this show was one entertaining ride!

Content Note: TV-14 for violence, language, and mild sexuality.

  1. Thanks for bringing Beyond Tomorrow yo my attention. I’m so excited to have a classic holiday film to watch that I’ve never seen. Ghost Town is a family favorite. And I watched I Am Dragon recently thanks to Silver Petticoat’s review.

  2. I love, love, LOVE your all’s website! I have been “peeking in”, for several years now, and quite found your lovely website by accident.
Never was a hardcore rom-com fan. I remember going thru channels and seeing shows with women and men from different eras, when I was younger, and making that gag me motion, with my finger, along with the accompanying sound effects….well I grew up, finally, and was barely 30, when a lifelong friend had a movie someone gave her, “ Austen, or they are from Austin, I dunno, she said she had to read it in her English lit class I think, but anyway…”. I tried to get out of it then and there. I pleaded with her not to make me watch something they made us suffer through in school. 30 minutes. That was the deal. If it sucked, we would watch Forrest Gump-again. I quietly took my punishment. The next thing I knew, an hour and a half had passed, and either of us had barely said a word to each other, and we are both chatterboxes. I was completely fixated. My breath hung on every word spoken. A semi truck could have crashed thru the living room, and my singular thought would have been to see how fast I could claw myself over the truck hood so my eyes could reconnect with the screen as fast as possible. And the next thing I honestly can remember; a burning lump in my throat, followed by tears. Then streams of tears. It was this way, for the rest of the movie. Well, except for the last of the movie. It turned into sobbing. Like gasping-for-air sobbing, like being three again when-you-can’t-stop-sobbing-sob….for me, anyway; my friend had never, ever, seen me react this way during any of the girls night movies-and she was busy rolling in the floor, laughing so hard, she was crying as well; just not because of the movie. This may have been partly, because of a comment I had made a year or so ago, about “ people crying watching a love story?! Why do they cry for?? That makes no sense whatsoever! Well, you’ll never see me cry like some girly girl(even though I am a girl) over a love plot…”
In retrospect, I would have laughed at me, too. The next day, we piled into the car, to go search for anything else this woman, Jane Austen, did. Oh yes, I was lucky enough to have Pride and Prejudice be my very first “period drama, or costume drama, period romance..ect. I didn’t even know there was a name for this newly discovered, “guilty” pleasure. But I wanted more. And I wanted it now.
And so I typed in “Period drama romance”, and the “petticoat” in your name caught my eye. And as luck has it-this was the first, and last website I chose to click the link on, for all my Costume/Period romance “fixes” when I am withdrawing, so I can stay in my couch potatoes all day, with a blanket, box of Kleenex, and sugary junk food , on the sofa, and have “me” time. It’s good for my soul, and the workweek just seems so much, easier?
Just wanted to say thanks, ladies. I am an anonymous fan of your site, “why I do declare!” ( couldn’t resist…just got done watching a movie called Gone with the wind”..how could I have never liked this stuff?!?)

    • Wow, thank you for your lovely message. We really appreciate you sharing your story! And we’re glad you found us. I think more and more people are discovering just how lovely period drama romances are and that is wonderful!
