THE PAIRING: Oliver and Felicity

ROMANTIC MOMENT: The key to their new beginning.
The last few seasons of Arrow have been rough on “Olicity” fans. As one of the hottest couples on the CW and DCTV Universe, Oliver and Felicity have been more off than on over the last few seasons. Lack of communication, trust issues, and the inability to let the past go caused Oliver and Felicity to drift further and further apart. Still, despite their differences, Oliver and Felicity maintained a connection that spoke to their deep feelings for each other.
Like any epic love story, sometimes a couple needs to drift apart to better understand themselves and what really makes their lives, well, better. Sometimes, being apart helps a couple find their way back to each other….in a better time and a better place.
Like any other fan, I want to see my favorite couple together and happy. However, I’m not in any hurry. I want it done right and I want it to be perfect. No rushing! Build that history and forge that deep connection! After quite a few missteps, Arrow has (finally!) brought Olicity back together in Season 6 (the end of Season 5 doesn’t count in my book!) and they are better than ever! The last several episodes of Arrow gave Olicity fans a number of scenes to swoon over. Oliver and Felicity communicate better, they hide less from each other, and more importantly, they don’t shy away from their history. Instead, they embrace it. It’s what makes them strong and entwines them together.

Between episode 6×03, “Next of Kin,” and episode 6×04, “Reversal,” there are any number of romantic moments to choose from. However, I still can’t get over that final scene between them in “Next of Kin.” The moment that Oliver gave Felicity the key to his apartment and thus, unlocking a new chapter in their relationship. It’s that moment I chose for this week’s Silver Petticoat Review Romantic Moment of the Week.
The Lead In – Oliver and Felicity Flirt and Tease
No matter what is going on, Oliver and Felicity have an insane amount of intensity in every scene they share. Whether lighthearted or perilous, their bond fairly shimmers with emotion. Their link was on full display during “Next of Kin.” Each scene with Oliver and Felicity was one long build-up to that ultimate romantic moment. It began with flirtatious banter. Oliver asked Felicity’s advice on how to help William with his math homework. After Oliver candidly admits that math wasn’t his strongest subject, Felicity gives him a cheeky response.
“No? What was? Truancy?”
She’s saucy but Oliver deadpans his reply, his eyes intently on her.
“Charm.”
No one can resist Oliver Queen when he gives you a look like that one. It’s no wonder Felicity can’t help the smile that sneaks across her face. There is no doubt that Oliver Queen is charming!
But, wait, there’s more! When Oliver asks Felicity to tutor William, they have the cutest of exchanges and you can just feel their joy at simply talking.

Then, when Felicity is tutoring William she jokes with him about Oliver not living in the real world. Felicity doesn’t realize Oliver is standing just outside the door, watching her with William. The camera focuses in on Oliver and you can’t help but see the longing on his face as he stares at Felicity and William bonding over math. When he brings in some brain food (Monte Cristos!!), he teases Felicity with her own words and they share another intimate look.
Later, all of these moments, these different sides of Olicity, come together in a single, perfect romantic moment.
Romantic Moment – The Key to Oliver’s Apartment…..and His Heart
When Felicity opens the door, she’s surprised to see Oliver…..with a gift. The mood changes instantly. Suddenly, Felicity is nervous as her glance moves between Oliver and the small box in his hands. She’s not alone in her nervousness. Oliver walks in and with his back to Felicity, he looks up at the ceiling and takes a fortifying breath. He looks like he is giving himself a mental pep talk before turning to face Felicity.
There’s a moment of silence as Oliver just stares at Felicity, his eyes shining. Felicity breaks the silence by asking about the gift. Turns out, William received an A on his test and Oliver brought her a thank you gift. It’s then we see a side of Felicity that’s been missing. That natural tendency she has to endlessly talk when she’s nervous. In the space of seconds, she wonders at William being Oliver’s son after receiving an A on his math test to attempting to cover her gaffe by reassuring Oliver of his many wonderful qualities. Including his amazing abs…..
The smallest of smiles play at the edges of Oliver’s lips as he frowns at her but at the mention of his amazing abs, a full-fledged grin breaks across his face and his eyebrow quirks up in amusement. This is Felicity at her very core. The woman he met and fell in love with way back when she was just an IT Girl and he was recently returned from the dead.
Felicity opens the gift to find a key attached to a cute emoji keychain. She frowns in confusion as she looks up at Oliver. At his explanation, her frown turns into an expression of surprise. And confusion.

Nervous Oliver is back and he stumbles a tiny bit as he starts to explain. After William lost his mother, Oliver and Felicity decided, together, to keep their distance as William adjusts to his new life. But, Oliver realized that keeping their distance while waiting for William to process every new challenge meant that they would always keep their distance. There would always be new challenges.
Seeing Felicity with William made Oliver realize that the answer wasn’t to keep their distance. Having Felicity in William’s life would not make things more difficult for William. It would make things better. More importantly, it would make Oliver’s life better. Oliver’s voice is strong with conviction and his feelings for Felicity.
Through it all, there is this expression of hope on Felicity’s face and it’s heart-wrenching. They’ve been here before. It’s only natural for her to make sure that Oliver really wants this….her, in his and William’s life regularly. They’ve been here before. Only, this time, it’s different. Oliver is different. Felicity is different. This time, the moment is right. Oliver never hesitates and his eyes sparkle as he tells her that this is what he wants.
And then, Oliver proceeds to show her just how much he wants her in his life.
There is so much history between Oliver and Felicity. It’s woven into the very fabric of their relationship, filled with ups and downs. It is what makes them Oliver and Felicity. They are strong as individuals yet, stronger together. Olicity is back….and better than ever!
Bonus Romantic Moment
In this blink and you’ll miss it moment from”Reversal,” Oliver and Felicity show just why you “never give up the ship.” After the successful (at least they think!) completion of a mission, Oliver and Felicity go home together.
It’s a fleeting, beautiful moment and a peek at what we can look forward to as the season progresses!
