Blood Passage, the sequel to Exquisite Captive by Heather Demetrios, is the best sequel I have read in a long time. A LONG TIME. It is on equal footing with the original, even surpassing it in many ways.

Blood Passage follows Nalia, the rightful Queen of Arjinna, her lover Raif, the leader of a rebellion, and her former master on a quest to find a jinni relic that could mean either salvation or slavery for every jinni. It twists and turns, weaving a path through sand covered deserts, colorful bazaars, and the dark caravan, jinni slave traders. Everything about the book is brightly colored and richly flavored. I just loved it.

With Heather Demetrios, you are in the hands of a capable, concise writer. She writes in such a way that draws the reader in, painting beautiful scenes.
The characters, most of whom we already know, grow in interesting and dynamic ways. Even the villain of the last book is viewed in a different mirror, showing his growth as a character and Nalia’s continuing internal struggle.
Blood Passage continues to explore the themes introduced in the first book, delving deeper into the questions of longing for love, human trafficking, and good vs. evil. This book allows the reader to look at things that are often hard to talk about from the safety of their couch. It’s a great book for adults and teens. I definitely recommend it.
Content Note: This book is shelved YA but is probably more for the 17 and older crowd. It contains sex, violence, and other adult themes. Be aware.
