The Sweetest Heart (2018) – Cupcake Shop Develops Ingredients for Perfect Romance

The Sweetest Heart (2018) Review

Anytime a new Hallmark original is poised to debut, I’m one of those girls who is so there for it. Along with the spring breezes comes their most recent Spring Fever campaign, where four all-new original romances premiered. All of which were cute in their own ways. One of those new premieres is The Sweetest Heart.

Once upon a time, Maddie had a plan. A plan that involved going to culinary school and keeping intact a relationship with her high school sweetheart. The first few years are rough, but they make it work until Nate gets cold feet, and the perfect pair breaks up.

Now, years later, Maddie (Julie Gonzalo) is living her dream and running her own cupcake bakery shop in the building she always dreamed of using. Nate (Chris McNally) is a successful cardiologist who’s just returned to their small hometown. But just as it looks like fate gives Maddie and Nate a second chance,  a charming businessman, Alex (Victor Zinck Jr.) pursues Maddie, a man she met after brokering an expansion plan for her business. As business collides with personal feelings, it soon becomes clear there’s more than a unique cupcake recipe at stake.

Though it can be said of each and every one of the Hallmark films, The Sweetest Heart proves to be another darling story. From its setting to the familiarity of its cast, it creates a winning recipe no one will be able to resist. As is the case with nearly all of the stories on this network, you’ll spy many a familiar face in this film. From Andrea Brooks (When Calls the Heart) to Tammy Gillis (Unleashing Mr. Darcy), the supporting cast features familiar faces. Of course, Julie Gonzalo has also appeared in other Hallmark films (Pumpkin Pie Wars) and Chris McNally, though not in the leading man role has also been in prior productions.

As a whole, one of the most endearing things about this script is the multiple stories that begin to take shape. Excepting Maddie, none of the characters are fully fleshed out. That said, the burgeoning romances of her best friend and her employee are both cute. Then there’s Maddie’s love story; will she pursue a new relationship or will she fall back into the comfort of her first love? While the ultimate conclusion is sweet, I have to confess, the lead into the ending, inspired by the decision of a certain character, is a little bit of a letdown. For me, this “twist” shows a lack of growth, but then, when all is said and done, of course, the romantic in me is still happy. To say more would reveal too many spoilers, so I’ll simply leave it here.

Inserting charm is the setting, which is cute. Maddie’s little shop teems with deliciously prepared baked goods, and the flavor combinations she experiments with sound heavenly. Needless to say, I want to walk into her shop and order a cupcake off her menu. (Maybe even one of everything.) Let me tell you, the cute baking sequence in the film does nothing to squelch this opinion, either.

Overall, if you’re looking for something cute to enjoy on these chilly spring evenings, make one of those nights a night in and enjoy The Sweetest Heart. Only, just as the title would suggest, the many cupcakes you’ll see and hear about are sure to make that sweet tooth crave something sweet.
