Silver Petticoat’s Summer 2017 Box Office Preview
Summer is officially here. With it arrives a slew of box office and big budget blockbusters prone to copious amounts of action-packed explosions. Among them are superhero films, sequels, and action-packed historical biopics.

Since summer is the happy place for these types of films, it’s a little more difficult to find the quieter dramas some of us prefer. However, if you enjoy box office magic but the quieter drama is more your movie-going speed, we have you covered. Below we’ve collected a series of films that range from romance to period drama adaptations, and yes, a few big-screen flicks thrown in for variety.
As every film is bound to, some of these release dates may change, and many of these are “limited” release.

#1 Spider-Man: Homecoming, July 7
Tom Holland, Robert Downey Jr. | Adaptation, Action/Adventure | PG13
You’ll remember Marvel rebooted the Spider-Man legacy (again) in Captain America: Civil War. In this version, he’s played by newcomer Tom Holland. This marks his first solo film as Spider-Man.
#2 Swallows and Amazons, July 14
Andrew Scott, Rafe Spall and Kelly MacDonald | Adaptation, Period Drama | PG
Chronicles the adventures of the Swallow children who discover their island might be inhabited. An adventurous rivalry springs up as they plot to protect their island.

#3 Dunkirk, July 21
Kenneth Branagh, James D’Arcy, and Tom Hardy | Biopic, Period Drama | PG-13
A historical biopic that reenacts the iconic Dunkirk evacuation efforts during WWII.
#4 Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, July 21
Cara Delevingne, Clive Owen, Ethan Hawke | Sci-Fi, Adaptation | PG-13
Directed by Luc Besson (of the Taken franchise), this sci-fi adventure is based on the popular comic book of the same name.
#5 Columbus, August 4
John Cho, Haley Lu Richardson, and Parker Posey | Romance, Drama | Unrated
John Cho (of Star Trek fame) stars in this, what looks to be, quirky drama. Cho plays a man stuck in a small rural town, and while there, he meets an unusual young woman.
#6 The Dark Tower, August 4
Idris Elba, Matthew McConaughey, and Katheryn Winnick | Sci-Fi, Dystopian | PG-13
Described as an “Old West-like landscape” world, this one follows a gunslinger hero searching for the mysterious “Man in Black,” a villain to his world. A story that to me, sounds like a kind of dystopian western. It’s based on a novel by Stephen King.
#7 The Glass Castle, August 11
Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson, Naomi Watts | Adaptation, Period Drama | PG-13
Described as a coming of age story about a girl from a family of “nomads.” (The FBI is involved too!) This is based on the memoir of the second eldest daughter, it follows her into adulthood and stars breakout star, Brie Larson. (Oh, yeah, and the cute cop, Max Greenfield, who crushed on Veronica Mars!)
#8 All Saints, August 25
John Corbett | Biopic, Drama | PG
Based on a true story about a traveling salesman who becomes a pastor in a small town and the immigrants his church helps.
#9 Leap!, August 30
Carly Rae Jepsen, Nat Wolff, and Elle Fanning | Animation | PG
This one tells the story of an aspiring ballerina in 1879 Paris, plus it looks too cute!
#10 Battle of the Sexes, September 22
Emma Stone and Steve Carrell | Period Drama, Comedy, Biopic | PG13
A comedy about a 1970s tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs.
#11 Stronger, September 22
Jake Gyllenhaal, Tatiana Maslany, and Miranda Richardson | Biopic, Drama | Unknown
Based on the true story of a Boston marathon victim, and his road to recovery.
#12 Victoria and Abdul, September 22
Judi Dench | Period Drama, Biopic | PG-13
Chronicles the life of an elderly Queen Victoria and the friendship she forms with a young Indian clerk. Familiar faces like Olivia Williams, Tim Pigott-Smith and Michael Gambon co-star.
