Silver Petticoat’s Fall 2017 Box Office Preview

Not unlike the magic of cinema, the changing of the seasons always gives us a visual feast each year. As summertime (and those popular promoted summer blockbusters) fade away, the sights, sounds and colors of autumn invade.

After the fast pace of the summer blockbusters slows, filmmakers use the next two seasons to roll out possible award season contenders. In the next three months, expect to see much quieter releases. As I scoured the Internet for some lesser known titles in addition to the popular ones, I made some exciting discoveries. Most surprising were all of the biopics! Accompanying those is the return of a slew of superheroes, sleuths, and period dramas, one of which looks magical.

Now, before I take a look at the new films coming to movie theaters near you, for the 30th anniversary, in a limited capacity, some theaters will show The Princess Bride for two days, October 15th and 16th. If it plays anywhere near you, and you’re a fan of the classic film, how fun a movie-going experience is this?

As every film is bound to, some of these release dates may change, and many of these are “limited” release.

#1 The Mountain Between Us – October 6

Kate Winslet, Idris Elba | Adaptation, Drama | PG-13

Based on the novel of the same name, here we meet two strangers who become stranded on a mountain. You may be surprised to know this isn’t the most jarring thing about the trailer. It’s actually Kate’s American accent!

2 So B. It – October 6

Alfre Woodard, Jacinda Barrett | Adaptation, Drama | PG-13

Adapted from an award-winning novel, this drama promises tears. It follows a young girl who lives with her mentally disabled mother. Wanting to know who her family is, she sets out on a journey to discover who she is.

#3 Breathe – October 13

Andrew Garfield, Claire Foy | Biopic, Period Drama | PG-13

For those of us who enjoy stories of enduring strength coupled with a strong romantic component, Breathe looks promising.

Garfield plays Robin Cavendish, a man who contracted polio at 28 and dedicated his life to helping others with disabilities.

#4 Goodbye Christopher Robin – October 13

Margot Robbie, Domhnall Gleeson | Biopic, Period Drama | PG

This tells the story of A.A. Milne, the creator of Winnie-the-Pooh, which was published in 1926. As this character inspires nostalgic feelings of childhood, I suspect this is going to be one of the good ones.

#5 Marshall – October 13

Chadwick Boseman, Kate Hudson, Sterling K. Brown and Dan Stevens | Biopic, Period Drama | PG-13

A biopic that chronicles the life of a young Thurgood Marshall who went on to become a Supreme Court Justice. The story follows Thurgood during his life as a trial lawyer when he represents a man accused of rape.

#6 The Secret Scripture – October 13

Rooney Mara, Theo James, Vanessa Redgrave, Aidan Turner, | Period Drama | PG-13

Bursting with impressive talent, this period drama chronicles the life of a woman in Ireland who lives in a mental hospital facility. Based on a novel, rumor has it Jessica Chastain and Jonathan Rhys Meyers were originally attached to star.

#7 Swing Away – October 13

Shannon Elizabeth | Comedy | PG

In the aftermath of an American pro golfer being suspended from the tour, she escapes to Greece for some R&R. While there, she becomes involved in a land developer’s plans to forever alter the place her grandparents grew up.

#8 Wonderstruck – October 20

Julianne Moore, Michelle Williams | Adventure, Fantasy | PG

Like its title suggests, this one is an adventure story about two young people who are both looking for something. From two different eras, they find an unexpected connection that leads them on a journey they’ll never forget.

#9 Lady Bird – November 3

Saoirse Ronan, Odeya Rush | Comedy | Rating Unknown

Greta Gerwig directs this dramedy about a rebellious teenage girl. It follows her life in California in the aftermath of her father losing his job while her mother works to keep their family afloat.

#10 Murder on the Orient Express – November 10

Johnny Depp, Judi Dench, Daisy Ridley | Drama, Mystery, Adaptation | PG-13

Kenneth Branagh directs this epic Agatha Christie adaptation. Not only are we assured a good story (because of Christie), we also have the pleasure of seeing so much talent in one place.

#11 Wonder – November 17

Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson | Adaptation, Drama | PG

Based on the best-selling novel of the same name, when I saw this trailer, I knew this would be a must-see. The premise (about a boy with a deformed face starting school for the first time) promises us an inspiring albeit tearful tale of hope.

#12 Darkest Hour – November 22

Lily James, Gary Oldman, Stephen Dillane and Kristin Scott Thomas | Biopic, Period Drama | PG-13

Set during the early days of WWII, viewers will experience the war from the perspective of England’s new prime minister, Winston Churchill.

#13 The Man who Invented Christmas – November 22

Dan Stevens, Christopher Plummer | Biopic, Period Drama | PG

The man who captured hearts as Matthew Crawley is back. Dan Stevens returns to period drama playing the iconic role of Charles Dickens at the inception of his Ebenezer Scrooge character.

#14 I, Tonya – December 8

Margot Robbie, Sebastian Stan | Biopic, Drama | PG-13

A biopic about the infamous incident between professional figure skaters Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan has finally been made. Though if the trailer is any indication, this one will look at the story from Tonya’s perspective, and the upheaval her life is thrown into. One of Hollywood’s new favorite stars, Margot Robbie stars in the titular role.

#15 The Greatest Showman –December 25

Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams | Musical, Romance | PG-13

“Inspired by the imagination of P.T. Barnum,” this Christmas day cinematic extravaganza (complete with a dreamy cast and top hats!) looks stunning. Combining a story with song and dance, we know Hugh Jackman can sing, which gives me every confidence this one will be a gem.
