Welcome to spring or spring adjacent! Although we aren’t “officially” into spring just yet, it’s just around the corner. I suspect most of us are ready to smell rain-scented air and see apple blossoms and see new movies, of course. Today, to help us get into a spring-y mood, we’re previewing the best of the new movie releases coming soon to the box office.

Below, you’ll find some of the films we think look promising. On this list, you’ll find sequels, indie films, superheroes and of course, a period drama and romance or two. Because who here doesn’t love an epic, angsty romance now and again?
Of note is a handful of book-to-screen adaptations, and a live-action film from Disney that looks to bring us back to our childhood. So, here we go. Let’s have a look at what’s opening in theaters the next three months, and see a glimpse of the summer blockbuster season with May’s premieres!

Based on historical events, Cliffs of Freedom is the story of a romance between a Greek young woman and a Turkish Colonel.

2: Saint Judy – March 1 (Limited)
Michelle Monaghan, Peter Krause | PG-13 | Drama, Biopic
This one follows the “based on a true story” plot of an immigration attorney based in LA.
3: Captain Marvel – March 8
Brie Larson, Jude Law | PG-13 | Marvel, Action/Adventure, Sci-Fi
Marvel is ready for us to meet their newest superhero. Brie Larson steps into the shoes of the woman we all know will play a big part in the final Avengers film.
4: The Aftermath – March 15 (Limited)
Keira Knightley | R (primarily for sexual content/nudity) | Romance, Period Drama, Historical
Based on the novel of the same title, this one features period drama favorite, Keira Knightley. The story follows her character as she reunites with her army husband in 1946 Germany only to discover he’s made arrangements for them to share a house with a German man and his daughter.
5: Faith, Hope and Love – March 15 (Limited)
Robert Krantz, Peta Murgatroyd, Corbin Bernsen | Drama, Romance | PG
Dancing with the Stars pro, Peta Murgatroyd stars in this story about a woman who enters a dance competition never anticipating she’d find love.
6: Five Feet Apart – March 15
Haley Lu Richardson, Cole Sprouse | Romance, Drama | PG-13
This one is about two teens with cystic fibrosis, and the struggles they face not only in their journey to health but in falling in love.
7: For Love or Money – March 15 (Limited)
Robert Kazinsky, Samantha Barks | Romantic Comedy | NR (Content Unclear)
A cute-looking romantic comedy.
8: Dumbo – March 29
Colin Farrell, Eva Green, Michael Keaton | Adaptation, Family, Historical Fantasy | PG
Disney and Tim Burton take us on another trip down memory lane with this live-action remake of Dumbo. If you haven’t seen the image stills, look at the trailer’s thumbnail below, and tell me, is this not the cutest little elephant you ever did see?
9: The Best of Enemies – April 5
Sam Rockwell, Taraji P. Henson | Drama, Biopic | PG-13
Based on a true story, this biographical drama is about Ann Atwater and the fight she launches against C.P. Ellis to integrate schools in the 1970s.
10: Teen Spirit – April 5 (Limited)
Elle Fanning, Rebecca Hall | Drama, Teen | PG-13
Elle Fanning plays a girl who enters a music competition with hopes to achieve her dreams of a musical career. This one is described as a “visceral and stylish spin on the Cinderella story,” which does sound… interesting.
11: Breakthrough – April 17
Topher Grace, Josh Lucas, Chrissy Metz | Drama, Biopic | PG
This tells the story of a teenager who was reported dead after 27 minutes without a pulse until his mother begins to pray, and miraculously, Smith again has a pulse. Chrissy Metz from This is Us co-stars in this drama.
12: Red Joan – April 19 (Limited)
Judi Dench, Tom Hughes | Drama, Period Drama | Rating Unknown
Judi Dench plays a woman who, in the year 2000, is accused of being a Russian spy. The film then flashes to 1938 and chronicles Joan’s romance with a communist. The tagline says this is “inspired by true events.”
13: The Sun is Also a Star – May 17
Yara Shahidi, Charles Melton | Drama, Adaptation, Romance | PG-13
Based on the best-selling YA novel, this story follows two teens through one day in New York as they fall in love.
14: Aladdin – May 24
Naomi Scott, Mena Massoud, Will Smith, Billy Magnussen | Family, Musical, Adaptation | Rating Unknown
Guy Ritchie (Sherlock Holmes) directs this Disney re-make of the 1992 animated film. This time around, it’s live-action, and like Dumbo, it looks magnificent.
15: Tolkien – May 10 (Limited)
Nicholas Hoult, Lily Collins | Period Drama | PG-13
This biopic will chronicle the early life of famous writer J.R.R. Tolkien.
16: Wild Rose – May 10 (Limited)
Jessie Buckley | Drama | PG-13
Jessie Buckley, from Amazon’s The Last Post, takes on a leading role in this indie drama about a British woman with a few too many mistakes to her name. Despite this, she pursues a dream of becoming a country music star.
