My Journey Into Old Movies: An Introduction

I have a confession to make. I have a bit of an irrational dislike for old movies. Anything made before, well really the 90’s, although I do enjoy some movies from the 80’s, I refuse to watch. Anyways, I’m not sure where this bias came from, but suffice to say I stay far away from watching any film made before 1980. My guess is that I was never exposed to them, and like most people, I don’t like what I’m not comfortable with. But that’s all about to change. I’m a girl who likes a good challenge, and I actually do like to force myself to experience things outside of my comfort zone. The funny thing is I’ve done and experienced many things that most people wouldn’t dare try in a million years. I’ve traveled all over the world, eaten food that most Americans wouldn’t dare try, gone on adventures in the wilderness and the outback that would terrify most. And that’s just a taste of the kinds of new and sometimes terrifying situations I’ve forced myself to face. Hell, maybe I should create a new column out of that. But moving on, for some reason, when it comes to movies, I act like trying something new and different might kill me. It makes no sense. I know.

I guess we all have our irrational fears. We live in a society rampant with superstition after all. I’ve decided to face this fear, though. I’m going to brave the beast, you might say. For one year every week I am going to watch one old film that I’ve refused to see in the past. That means by the time I’m done I’ll have seen 52 classic films (as chosen by fellow Silver Petticoat writers Amber and Autumn who LOVE classic film). And I’m going to share every experience with you. I’ll write about my misgivings, exactly how I felt while watching each movie, the moments that I was surprised by, moments I was amazed that I enjoyed, everything. It should be interesting. So, here I go…one year of classic movies here I come!

Make sure to follow along, I’ll be announcing the new film a week ahead so you can watch with me!

About Rebecca Lane

Rebecca Lane grew up in the hot desert landscape of Tucson, Arizona where she decided early on she wanted to write, if only to mentally escape her blistering surroundings. She has always been enamored of the arts and literature. As a child she often wrote short stories, and rewrote the endings of novels that she simply could not abide. She received her Undergraduate degree from Sarah Lawrence College in New York, where she was lucky enough to also spend a year studying at Oxford University. While she began her journey dreaming of the day she would sing opera in a large Manhattan theater, she found in the end she could not stand waitressing and simply could not give up books and her hopes of someday writing them. She is currently working as a freelance writer/editor and earning her Masters in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University.
