Fantasy Costume Dramas

“Fantasy film is a genre that incorporates imaginative and fantastic themes. These themes usually involve magic, supernatural events, or fantasy worlds. Although it is its own distinct genre, these films can overlap into the horror and science fiction genres.” – The Script Lab

Generally, when you think fantasy costume dramas, Lord of the Rings and Star Wars come to mind. But then there are also sub-genres like Steampunk that very much have a Victorian setting. Many movies include magic but take place during recognizable historical moments. Because of this fact, our period drama review archives sorts these historical fantasies into the eras in which they take place. So, several fantasy films can be found on other pages of the archives.

What this page includes is everything leftover. For instance, the fantasy films without a historical setting. We also include period dramas that take place in several time periods (unless the film is ‘mostly in one era). Then there are the others, the movies that just feel like they belong. Because Austenland totally deserves a place on this page!

Similar to the other historical eras, The Silver Petticoat Review Archives incorporates costume dramas from all over the world.

Note: As always, the content on our site has a more old-fashioned theme and focuses more on PG-13 content or below. Anything Rated R or rated TV-MA will get a content warning in the review.

Be sure to check out the other historical eras from our main page of the Period Drama Review Archives. From Ancient, Baroque, Victorian, to Georgian, there are several period dramas just waiting for you to check out!
