Fall 2019 Box Office: The best new movies coming soon!
With the summer blockbusters now coming to an end, it’s time to look at Fall’s new movie releases. At this time of year, movies tend to be more serious or artistic, some filmmakers even hoping to receive award nominations later. And then at the tail end of the Fall season, a few seasonal movies make an appearance. So, if you’re into dramas, romance, indie films, and more, Fall may just be the perfect season for you to go to the theater. So, today, we’ve got your guide to the fall 2019 box office!

Fall 2019 Box Office Preview of the Best New Movie Releases
(titles release from September – November; films sorted by release date, which are subject to change)
1: Edie – September 6 (Limited Release)
Drama | Stars Sheila Hancock | Rating Unknown
Produced back in 2017, this one just now has a U.S. release date. The story is an inspiring one about an 83-year-old woman who feels forgotten and misplaced. To help remedy a life she feels she wasted, she decides to climb a mountain in Scotland. Meanwhile, she develops a friendship with a young climber along the way.
2: Can You Keep a Secret? – September 13
Alexandra Daddario, Tyler Hoechlin | Rating Unknown
Based on the novel by the Confessions of a Shopaholic author, this story looks cliche, but also as if it might be quite fun. In the middle of a turbulent plane trip, a woman believing she’s about to die spills her diary of secrets to the man seated next to her. Unfortunately for her, that man ends up being her new boss.
3: Downton Abbey – September 20
Michelle Dockery, Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Maggie Smith | PG
At the tippy-top of my anticipated new movie releases this season is Downton Abbey. Everything about this film’s promotion leads me to believe we’ll be swept right back up into the lives of our favorite Crawley family and their devoted household staff.
4: Judy – September 27
Renee Zellweger | PG-13
In an unexpected return to the big screen, Renee Zellweger steps into the shoes of Judy Garland in this Fall 2019 box office flick that promises an emotional biopic about the titular character’s time performing in the 60s. It’s already getting Oscar buzz.
5: The Current War – October 4
Benedict Cumberbatch, Nicholas Hoult, Tom Holland, Tuppence Middleton, Matthew Macfadyen | PG-13
A historical biopic about the “war” between inventors like Nicola Tesla and Thomas Edison. The cast looks incredibly impressive, suggesting this one will hopefully be an interesting period drama.

6: Sometimes Always Never – October 4
Bill Nighy, Sam Riley | PG-13
After the year’s long disappearance of his son, a man tries to repair his strained relationship with his younger son as they contemplate the reality the elder son is gone for good.
In addition to a story described as “quirky,” it’s important to note that this one features Sam Riley, an actor who once played Mr. Darcy (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies) and Jenny Agutter from Call the Midwife.
7: High Strung: Free Dance – October 11
Jane Seymour | PG
Veteran actress Jane Seymour leads an unknown cast in this film that celebrates dance.

8: Maleficent: Mistress of Evil – October 18
Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning | PG
Just in time for All Hallow’s Eve, Disney returns to the Sleeping Beauty legend with a sequel to Maleficent. A visually beautiful and complex character-driven story, this follow up promises a new villain, and more of those impressive special effects, meaning this is likely to be a fun addition to the fall 2019 box office schedule.
9: Harriet – November 1
Cynthia Erivo, Leslie Odom Jr., Jennifer Nettles, Joe Alwyn | Rating Unknown
In contrast to The Current War, although this one is another historical biopic, it’s the story of an entirely different kind of war. In the center of this self-titled debut is the life of freedom fighter Harriet Tubman.
10: Midway – November 8
Luke Evans, Ed Skrein, Dennis Quaid, Patrick Wilson, Mandy More, Nick Jonas | PG-13
In the devastating aftermath of Pearl Harbor, this story is all set to follow a group of aviators during the historic battle of 1942 Midway. Similarly, Midway is from the director of the 2000 period drama The Patriot, which is also a war story.
11: Last Christmas – November 15
Emilia Clarke, Henry Golding | PG-13
I’m both curious and skeptical about this seasonal offering. There’s a vibe in the trailer that makes me think it could be charming and sweet or bittersweet (with a possible supernatural element).

But it nonetheless makes me hopeful. This one follows a woman whose life spirals out of control, and the unexpected encounter she has with a man who could change everything.
12: A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood – November 22
Tom Hanks, Matthew Rhys | PG-13
Tom Hanks stars as the famous Mr. Rogers in what looks like a strong Oscar-contender this upcoming awards season. This new movie release will also likely be an uplifting tearjerker.
13: Knives Out – November 27
Daniel Craig, Chris Evans | PG-13
To be honest, I’m not sure exactly what to make of Knives Out. Once I thought maybe it’d be a kind of noir Agatha Christie-centric production, but at second glance, it appears to be more of a comedy.
But the funny thing is, this will be Evans’s first post-Marvel role. In addition to Evans and Craig, Toni Collette (Emma) and Christopher Plummer will also co-star. All things considered, this one could be fun…?
