For those of you new to the book club, we rotate between choosing more recent books and “classic” books every other month, meaning one month we’ll pick a more contemporary book (published 2000 plus, although we’ll give preference to more recently published books) and then the next month we’ll pick a classic book (any book printed before the year 2000). This month’s pick is a contemporary book.

THE SILVER PETTICOAT BOOK CLUB REVEAL (YOUR NOVEMBER 2020 READ!)

The Silver Petticoat Book Club pick of November is…The Mischief of the Mistletoe: A Pink Carnation Christmas, a Historical Romance just in time for the holidays!

Have you ever read a book that made you laugh out loud several times? Every page of this entertaining historical romance will put a smile on your face. Sometimes, you just need a book that is pure escapism! Inspired by Jane Austen’s unfinished novel, The Watsons, Jane is even a secondary character in this diverting Pink Carnation novel. And, well, Jane Austen believes Arabella’s story would make a fantastic novel after all…

Arabella Dempsey was supposed to be an heiress. That is until her wealthy Aunt falls in love and sends poor Arabella back home to Bath with no prospects in sight. And as she isn’t married, Arabella has no choice but to become a teacher (an occupation our dear Jane warns her against).

Soon, Arabella bumps into the bumbling and rather sweet and loveable Turnip Fitzhugh. Everyone thinks he’s the spy known as the Pink Carnation just because he blunders around so adorably. Soon, Arabella and Turnip are thrown together to solve a mystery, a mystery involving a Christmas pudding and a mysterious message.

Adventure, mishaps, romance, and hilarity ensue in this delightful holiday novel. Now, I should warn you that there are several books in the Pink Carnation series. However, anyone can jump in because the story stands alone. Previously, I’ve only read the first book before reading this one. (By the way, it was also charming and hilarious.) Furthermore, The Mischief of the Mistletoe is also a rather captivating novel anyone can enjoy. You don’t have to celebrate Christmas to celebrate this fabulous story as it’s more about the festive setting than anything else. Overall, Lauren Willig’s writing will draw you in and sweep you off your feet!

All in all, there’s comedy, mystery, and an intriguing romantic hero for all the Bingley fans of the world. Be prepared to swoon, laugh, and escape for a few hours of pure bliss!

BOOK SYNOPSIS OF THE MISCHIEF OF THE MISTLETOE: A PINK CARNATION CHRISTMAS

Despite her dear friend Jane Austen’s warning against teaching, Arabella Dempsey accepts a position at a girls’ school in Bath, just before Christmas. She hardly imagines coming face-to-face with French aristocrats and international spies.

Reginald “Turnip” Fitzhugh-often mistaken for the elusive spy known as the Pink Carnation-has blundered into danger before. When Turnip and Arabella find their Christmas pudding yielding a cryptic message, they are launched on a Yuletide adventure. Will they find poinsettias-or peril?
