Our first classic book club pick is here! The Silver Petticoat Book Club rotates between picking newer books and “classic” books every other month. That means that one month we’ll pick a more modern book (any books published after the year 2000 – though we’ll give preference to more recently published books) and then the next month we’ll pick a classic book (any book printed before the year 2000). Your August 2020 read marks our first Classic Silver Petticoat Book Club pick! And it’s a fun one.

THE SILVER PETTICOAT BOOK CLUB REVEAL (YOUR AUGUST 2020 READ!)

The Silver Petticoat Book Club pick of August is…The Blue Castle, a classic romance from one of our favorite authors, L.M. Montgomery.

Most of you are probably familiar with her most famous book series, Anne of Green Gables. Or maybe even the equally fantastic Emily of New Moon Trilogy. But Lucy Maud Montgomery has so many lesser-known novels that deserve more love and appreciation.

The Blue Castle was published in 1926 and is one of her only adult fiction titles. Now, we love the characters in this book. Valancy is 29, treated like a child by her family, and is considered an old maid. But when she finds out she’s dying of a heart condition, Valancy decides to find happiness and move out. Hey, she’s even going to tell the Stirling clan what she really thinks about them.

Naturally, the town and her family think she’s lost her mind, especially when Valancy starts hanging out with Barney Snaith, a mysterious man that everyone believes is a criminal. But since Valancy is dying, she just doesn’t care. And that includes proposing to a man she barely knows. He only has to put up with her for a short time anyway.

Overall, we love The Blue Castle. It’s romantic, engaging, and darkly funny. We can’t wait to talk more about the book at the end of the month! We hope you enjoy your August 2020 read!

BOOK BLURB OF THE BLUE CASTLE

From L.M. Montgomery, author of Anne of Green Gables, comes another beloved classic and an unforgettable story of courage and romance.

Valancy Stirling is 29 and has never been in love. She’s spent her entire life on a quiet little street in an ugly little house and never dared to contradict her domineering mother and her unforgiving aunt. But one day she receives a shocking, life-altering letter―and decides then and there that everything needs to change. For the first time in her life, she does exactly what she wants to and says exactly what she feels.

At first her family thinks she’s gone around the bend. But soon Valancy discovers more surprises and adventure than she ever thought possible. She also finds her one true love and the real-life version of the Blue Castle that she was sure only existed in her dreams…

  1. I squealed!!
    LMM!!!!!!!!
Valancy is savage and Roaring Abel is an underrated gem.
Why do all the ‘Cecilia’ or ‘Cecily’ in LMM world have so much tragedy in her life?
    Cissy(blue castle)
    Cecily King (the Golden Road)
    Cecilia Meredith (Rainbow Valley)
I love Valancy and Barney!!!!(railway line!!!)
I hope I can talk back to my relatives like Valancy did at the dinner(relatives really are troublesome).

    • We love LMM! That’s a good point about the similar Cissy names. Hmm. Maybe it’s based on someone she knew! I would love to be able to speak my mind like Valancy! It’s so fun to read.

  2. I love, love, love The Blue Castle. I am not one for rereading books — unless it was written by Austen. Or a Bronte. Also Gail Carson Levine. But especially L. M. Montgomery. I actually just reread The Blue Castle earlier this summer and I am so thrilled that you chose it for your book club!

    • We have loved “The Blue Castle” for years so we knew it was going to be a pick at some point! It’s such a good book to reread. And I agree, I only reread books I really love. I do have some favorites. 🙂
