Below, you’ll find information on new Jane Austen movies coming soon as well as difficult to find adaptations. What you won’t find is a list of numerous Jane Austen adaptations that have been lost and will likely never be available to watch. IE: The 1960 adaptation of Persuasion deleted due to the BBC clean out.

If one of these Jane Austen movies become available, I’ll move the title to where it’s available to watch.

Sanditon (2019)

IMDB Synopsis: About Charlotte Heywood, a spirited and impulsive woman who moves from her rural home to Sanditon, a fishing village attempting to reinvent itself as a seaside resort.

Why You Should Watch: Finally, an adaptation of Jane Austen’s unfinished novel is coming! With a standout cast including Theo James, Anne Reid, and Rose Williams, this is arguably one of the most exciting upcoming period drama adaptations. Expect to see this miniseries later this year in Britain. And in the U.S. on PBS in the 2020 season.


IMDB Synopsis: Adaptation of the Jane Austen novel, ‘Emma’.

What You Need to Know: With a huge cast including Miranda Hart and Bill Nighy, this adaptation’s sure to be fantastic. Release date is unknown.

Modern Persuasion

IMDB Synopsis: A single woman focused on her career in New York is forced to deal with the aftermath of a failed relationship when an ex-boyfriend hires her company.

What You Need to Know: While many details haven’t been released yet, Alicia Witt has been cast in the lead role, and she’s a wonderful actress. It should be interesting to see how Persuasion is adapted for a modern story. Release date unknown. 


Clueless (1996)

What You Need to Know: This is a TV show based on the 1995 film. I linked to a rare DVD copy.

Doctors (2013)

What You Need to Know: A few episodes of this series are based on Jane Austen novels. I linked to a part of these episodes found on Youtube.

Jane Austen: Behind Closed Doors (2017)

What You Need to Know: Lucy Worsley hosts this TV documentary. I’d imagine this should become available sometime in the future.

Kraft Theatre – Emma (1954)

What You Need to Know: Found in season eight of Kraft Theatre. A copy may exist out there.

Kumkum Bhagya (2014) 

What You Need to Know: Indian soap opera based loosely on Sense and Sensibility. I currently can’t find anywhere to watch this one.

The Many Lovers of Miss Jane Austen (2011)

What You Need to Know: I linked to a used DVD copy, so there’s likely a few more out there. Part of this documentary has been uploaded to Youtube. Hopefully, more copies will become available in the future.

Matinee Theatre – Emma, Pride and Prejudice (1956-1957)

What You Need to Know: Rare copies apparently exist! So, keep your eyes peeled.

Novela (1967-1972)

What You Need to Know: Episodes included various adaptations of Jane Austen including Persuasion, Northanger Abbey, and Emma. I linked to an uploaded episode of Persuasion. However, it doesn’t have English subtitles.

Orgoglio e Pregiudizio (1957)

What You Need to Know: The link brings you to a copy on YouTube but there are no subtitles for this Pride and Prejudice adaptation from Italy.

Pride and Prejudice (1967)

What You Need to Know: The British Film Institute has a copy. So, maybe they’ll release this 6-part miniseries on DVD one day. For now, you can catch a few minutes of the production on Youtube by clicking on the above link.

The Real Jane Austen (2002)

What You Need to Know: I wasn’t able to find any DVD copies but they may exist out there. You can watch the documentary in part on Youtube.

Ruby in Paradise (1993)

What You Need to Know: This ’90s film starring Ashley Judd pays homage to Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey. Unfortunately, the movie is currently unavailable to buy on DVD or rent digitally. However, there is a low-quality version of the movie uploaded to Youtube. Hopefully, the movie will be available to buy in the future.
