Silver Petticoat’s Preview of the Best New Movies

June – August; titles listed by release date, which are subject to change

1: Late Night – June 7

Emma Thompson, Mindy Kaling | Comedy | R (primarily for language)

Though it earns an R-rating, this one does look like an entertaining film. Plus it features fan favorite Mindy Kaling from The Mindy Project, and more recently, the female-led Ocean’s 8. Plus, Emma Thompson and Hugh Dancy also star.

2: Hampstead – June 14

Diane Keaton, Brendan Gleeson, Lesley Manville | Comedy | PG-13

This British comedy is inspired by the true story of a man’s eviction and is a story of how two unlikely people discover they have more in common than they realize. Oh, and the dreamy James Norton (Grantchester) will also appear in this, though I suspect in a secondary role.

3: Plus One – June 14

Jack Quaid, Maya Erskine | Comedy, Romance | NR (content unknown)

Jack Quaid (yes, Dennis Quaid’s son) plays Ben, a guy with a best friend from college named Alice. It’s wedding season, and since both are single they decide to make it through the “I do” days as each other’s “plus one.”

4: Round of Your Life – June 21

Richard T. Jones, Evan Hara | Drama | NR (content unknown)

A teenager begins to take the sport his father loved and succeeded in seriously after his dad is in a near fatal car wreck that puts him in a coma.

5: Wild Rose – June 21

Jessie Buckley | Drama | R for language and sexuality

Jessie Buckley, from Amazon’s The Last Post, takes on a leading role in this indie drama about a British woman with a few too many mistakes to her name. Despite this, she pursues a dream of becoming a country music star.

6: Ophelia – June 28 (Limited)

Clive Owen, Daisy Ridley, Naomi Watts, Tom Felton | Drama, Period Drama | PG-13

A Shakespearean story, only this time the Hamlet tale is told from the perspective of Ophelia.

7: The Other Side of Heaven 2: Fire of Faith – June 28 (Limited)

Christopher Gorham | Drama | PG-13

Christopher Gorham from Covert Affairs stars in this follow up to the Anne Hathaway film from 2001. Described as Elder Groberg’s “return to Tonga in the 1960’s with his wife and five young daughters,” this one will continue the true tale of the missionary’s story and mission.

8: Yesterday – June 28

Lily James, Himesh Patel | Comedy, Drama | PG-13

This quirky comedy looks like a good deal of fun. The plot is about a struggling musician who wakes up in an alternate timeline where the Beatles don’t exist. Naturally, he uses this opportunity to reach stardom.

9: The Farewell – July 12 (Limited)

Awkwafina | Drama | PG

Promising a bittersweet story, The Farewell follows a generational family who plans a wedding in the wake of the news the matriarch hasn’t long to live.

10: The Lion King – July 19

Seth Rogan, Donald Glover, Beyonce, Chiwetel Ejiofor | Drama, Re-make | PG

Disney continues their line of live-action remakes with one of their most loved and award-winning animated films, The Lion King.

11: The Art of Racing in the Rain – August 9

Kevin Costner, Milo Ventimiglia, Amanda Seyfried | Adaptation, Drama, Family | PG

Pitched as the next Marley and Me, this one is sure to warm the hearts of anyone who loves animals. It’s also said to be from the dog’s perspective.

12: Blinded by the Light – August 14

Viveik Kalra, Hayley Atwell | Drama, Biopic | PG-13

Taking place in 1987, this is set “during the austere days of Thatcher’s Britain” when a teen finds his voice and comes to understand life “through the music of Bruce Springsteen.” This much to the dismay of his traditional family.

13: Where’d You Go, Bernadette – August 16

Cate Blanchett | Drama, Adaptation | PG-13

Based on the best-selling novel of the same name, this is one adaptation that seems to be closely guarded. There hasn’t been much press (images) for it, however, I’m still quite curious. Blanchett plays a mother who, after years of setting aside her own passions, decides to “disappear” to rediscover herself.

14: Official Secrets – August 23

Keira Knightley | Drama, Biopic | R (for language)

Popular period drama actress, Keira Knightley plays a whistle-blower in this dramatic contemporary biopic based on the life of Katharine Gun. Matthew Goode, Matt Smith, and Ralph Fiennes also co-star.
