100 of the Most Unabashedly Romantic TV Shows to Watch

Romance is among the most underrated and misunderstood genres in movies, books, and television. But it remains one of the most popular. Romance stories can be artistic, adventurous, and fun and can crossover with numerous other genres like paranormal, sci-fi, drama, comedy, fantasy, mystery, historical, and so much more.

Besides, who doesn’t love all the swoony moments in a romance show? They’re comforting to watch in these difficult times. The touch of a hand, a longing stare across a room, epic declarations of love, or even witty debates between a potential couple.

In celebration of the romance genre in all its swoon-worthy glory, I thought it would be fun to spotlight 100 of the most romantic TV shows from around the world.

Now this is not a list of the “best” (as in the most award-worthy and artistic – although some of them would make that list) but rather examples of some of the most unabashedly romantic TV series.

But what do I mean by unabashed? Unabashed means unashamed, unapologetic, and boldly sure of itself. In other words, these are the ones embracing romance in all its wonderful glory.

These romance shows don’t tip-toe around the love stories but rather grab ahold of what makes us romantics love the genre. These refreshingly romantic series stand out in a cynical world that believes romance is more about swiping left than an emotional connection.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I prefer epic, sweeping love stories and clever rom-coms over crude and unemotional romances any day. I’m more of a Jane Austen girl than 50 Shades of Grey. And most of these examples reflect that.

From period dramas, paranormal romance, fantasy, and international romance to romantic comedies, there’s something here for everyone. While some of these series are full-blown romances others have significant romantic subplots with memorable TV couples.

To make it easier for all of you looking for your next binge-watch (or slow burn if that’s more your style), I’ve included where you can watch these fantastic romantic TV shows.

Who knows, you may find yourself with something new to fall in love with.

Beauty and the Beast (1987-1990)

Why You Should Watch: This 1980s classic TV Show explores the Beauty and the Beast fairy tale in a refreshing and enjoyable way. The series follows the relationship between an assistant DA in New York City and a lion man living underground.

If you love Beauty and the Beast stories or urban fantasy, then this one is a must-see! Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman starred.

I also recommend the 2012 remake with Kristen Kreuk and Jay Ryan. It’s more sci-fi in its approach – but it is still brazenly romantic.

Blood Ties (2007)

Why You Should Watch: This urban fantasy/paranormal romance TV series is about a royal, immortal vampire, a private investigator losing her eyesight, and a detective solving mysteries together. It’s an example of how to do a love triangle right.

Beyond that, the chemistry between the two leads (Henry and Vicki) is fantastic! If you like the wit of Veronica Mars and paranormal romance, check out Blood Ties – a lesser-known Canadian series.

Chuck (2007-2012)

Why You Should Watch: There is something joyful about watching Chuck (played by the always likable Zachary Levi) and his endearing optimism.

As he’s thrown into the world of spies and intrigue, he falls in love with the agent hired to protect him. Chuck is a spy romantic comedy that will capture your heart from beginning to end! It has a cast of lovable characters too.

Coffee Prince (2007)

Why You Should Watch: This romantic K-drama rom-com remains one of South Korea’s most popular romantic TV shows. The unusual romance about a girl who pretends to be a boy (and then falls in love with a boy who believes she’s a boy-man) will captivate you from the start.

If you’re looking for a dreamy male lead and romance with a dash of java, look no further than Coffee Prince starring the charismatic and handsome Gong Yoo!

Content Note: It mostly feels like TV-PG.

Dark Angel (2000-2002)

Why You Should Watch: If you love stories about underdogs and sci-fi romance, Dark Angel should be right up your alley. Plus, you can see the fantastic chemistry between a young Jessica Alba (arguably her best role) and Michael Weatherly (NCIS).

The story follows Max, a genetically enhanced young woman who escapes the organization that made her. She crosses paths with Logan, a cyber-journalist, and starts to use her abilities for the greater good. Together, they fight corruption while also falling in love.

What’s great about this show is that it was ahead of its time concerning dynamic female roles. The girl is the “superhero,” while the guy is the computer whiz behind the scenes supporting her.

James Cameron was also the creator and even directed the epic finale (unfortunately, there’s a cliffhanger due to the show’s unfortunate cancellation).

If you love romances like Oliver and Felicity from Arrow, then you should enjoy Dark Angel. It’s an example of how romance doesn’t need to be angsty with unnecessary drama (like constant breaks ups and keeping secrets) to create obstacles.

Instead, good old-fashioned outside conflict and complex emotions keep these two apart. And that’s refreshing to watch.

Descendants of the Sun (2016)

Why You Should Watch: One of the most popular Korean romances, Descendants of the Sun captures old-fashioned romance in all its wonderful glory. The story follows the relationship between an officer and a surgeon in their thirties amid dangerous situations.

How often do you see a non-explicit romance about adults where the lead female has never dated? It’s pretty refreshing.

Descendants of the Sun embraces romance unabashedly and includes swoon-worthy scenes from start to finish. And there are not just one or two romances to enjoy, but three!

By the end (or was it the beginning?), Shi-jin will leave you wishing you could meet a guy just like him!

Doctor Who (2005-)

Why You Should Watch: This British fantasy/sci-fi/time travel series about a time-traveling alien saving the world grabbed my heart, and never let go. I especially fell in love with the slow-built romance between the Doctor and Rose (a relatable female character).

And while their romance will break your heart, it will also have you believe in love and the idea that every person can make a difference. If you’re seeking an escape from all your troubles, Doctor Who may be just the prescription you need.

Trust me; you’ll love David Tennant as the 10th Doctor (I also have a special love for Christopher Eccleston as the 9th Doctor). Hating him is like hating puppies!

And while it’s the first four seasons of the “new” Doctor Who I love the most, the later seasons are still excellent. Just expect an almost entirely different show under a new showrunner.

That’s one thing about Doctor Who. It’s continually regenerating to keep itself fresh. You’ll have to decide for yourself which era of the show you like best! Every season has memorable romantic moments.

Downton Abbey (2010-2015)

Why You Should Watch: If you’re still one of the few to have not seen this cultural phenomenon, you’re lucky because you can now stream all six seasons without waiting a year between seasons! 

The story follows the Crawley family and their servants in this romance drama.

With the feel of a classic novel, this original period drama has layered characters and believable romances to fall in love with, not to mention the fabulous performances from the entire cast! Downton Abbey is not a show to miss! And don’t forget to check out the two movies.

Gilmore Girls (2000-2007; 2016)

Why You Should Watch: Because Gilmore Girls is incredible with fantastic female characters, believable family drama, an unbreakable bond between a mother and daughter, small-town charm, and, of course, romance!

Influenced by the fast-talking narrative style of the Golden Age of Hollywood, Gilmore Girls has just the right amount of charm for those who appreciate clever dialogue, wit, and old-fashioned romance.

Gilmore Girls is also great for younger viewers since it showcases first love.

Goblin: The Lonely and Great God (2016-2017)

Why You Should Watch: If you like shows like Being Human, Doctor Who, good fantasy, or any stories influenced by fairy tales and folklore, Goblin is a show you can’t miss! I can’t say enough wonderful things about this fantastically written and acted series about an immortal trying to break his curse by finding a bride.

And while it’s the bromance between an immortal goblin and an eccentric grim reaper stealing the show, the romances in this series are epic in scope and embraced unabashedly.

With twists and turns at every corner, prepare to be hooked from start to finish. This series is also great for newbies in the Korean Drama world.

Grand Hotel (2011-2013)

Why You Should Watch: An addicting period drama from Spain, Grand Hotel may be one of the best on this list. You will not be able to stop watching the love story between Julio and Alicia amid the mysteries of the Grand Hotel! The romance and the chemistry between the leads are simply off the charts.

Sometimes it’s nice to watch a series unafraid to be what it is: a romance, of course, with mystery, deception, secrets, and more on the side.

Content Note: A few scenes of sensuality are sprinkled throughout the show, but they are infrequent and not explicit. It is rated TV-PG with a couple of episodes TV-14.

Greatest Love (2011)

Why You Should Watch: If you’re looking for a hilarious romantic comedy TV series, Greatest Love should be at the top of your list. This K-Drama takes a fun look at celebrity culture behind the scenes.

If you enjoy rom-coms based on situational humor (like Sandra Bullock films), then you should enjoy this laugh-out-loud romance about an A-list movie star with an attitude problem and a fallen pop star with a heart of gold.

Content Note: It feels mostly TV-PG.

Hart of Dixie (2011-2015)

Why You Should Watch: If you enjoy stories about small towns, you should love this light-hearted romantic comedy about a NY doctor moving to an Alabama town to take over her birth father’s practice.

If only I could live in a town where people’s biggest problems are who they should date! Hart of Dixie is pure frothy romantic escapism at its best.

Content Note: TV-PG (a few episodes might be TV-14)

The Hour (2011-2012)

Why You Should Watch: Often compared to Mad Men, this British series about an investigative newsroom is even better! The slow-built romance between best friends Freddie and Bel is one aspect of this wonderfully written show (Abi Morgan won an Emmy for the writing) that makes it stand out.

You don’t want to miss this thrilling series with award-worthy performances and an emotionally deep romance that pulls the story together.

Content Note: TV-14 for some suggestive (semi-explicit) situations and adult themes, brief strong language, and a few scenes of violence.

Jane the Virgin (2014-2019)

Why You Should Watch: Part romantic comedy, part telenovela, this award-winning series is addicting and charming for fans (like Jane) of old-fashioned romance who also believe in happy endings.

Though don’t be surprised when Jane the Virgin becomes tragic – it is a part telenovela, after all. The story begins with Jane – a religious and devout Catholic – who accidentally becomes artificially inseminated.

Content Note: Ranges between TV-PG and TV-14 depending on the episode.

La Femme Nikita (1997-2001)

Why You Should Watch: This Canadian series about a young woman forced to be a spy/operative is all about the slow build romance between Michael and Nikita.

While he seems cold at first, as the romance builds, you won’t be able to stop watching their compelling love story. If you enjoy TV romances where the main couple has intense chemistry and a deep emotional connection, then watch La Femme Nikita.

I also highly recommend watching the equally compelling remake, Nikita starring Maggie Q.

The Legend of the Blue Sea (2016-2017)

Why You Should Watch: A modern-day romance about a mermaid and a human told in two different time periods. Just yes!

The epic star-crossed romance across time is perfect for anyone who enjoys fairy tales, folklore, period dramas, and paranormal romance. The Legend of the Blue Sea can be funny and dramatic in the best ways possible!

Content Note: Mostly TV-PG; A couple of episodes are closer to TV-14 for adult themes and violence. Legend of the Blue Sea is an old-fashioned romance with nothing explicit.

Legend of the Seeker (2008-2010)

Why You Should Watch: If you enjoy heroic fantasies, this romantic TV series should be a good fit! The forbidden romance between Richard and Kahlan is what makes Legend of the Seeker so compelling.

Can they find a way to be together despite her dark powers and his hero destiny? The chemistry between the two leads is fantastic, and the show is fun to watch.

Content Note: TV-14 (primarily for fantasy violence and some sensuality).

Lost (2004-2010)

Why You Should Watch: Besides being a fantasy/sci-fi mystery series that will have you hooked from the start, what makes the show work are the characters and the relationships – many of which are unabashedly romantic.

If you haven’t watched Lost yet, it’s never too late to check out this popular series about a group of travelers stuck on a mysterious island!

Content Note: TV-14 for sensuality, frightening scenes, some violence, and occasional profanity.

Master’s Sun (2013)

Why You Should Watch: The Master’s Sun is one of my favorite K-dramas. This horror rom-com about a young woman who can see ghosts (only to discover that when she touches a wealthy – and very handsome – CEO, the ghosts disappear) is easily one of the most romantic series ever.

Master’s Sun is also perfect for fans of gothic romance. Imagine a combination of Mr. Darcy and Mr. Rochester, and you’ll find Joo Joong-won. If you want a list of more reasons to watch, check out our review!

Miranda (2009-2015)

Why You Should Watch: This British romantic comedy series about the socially awkward Miranda (who has a crush on one of her best friends, Gary) has two of the most likable leads you can imagine.

The show is also hilarious – especially if you appreciate British humor. Imagine Bridget Jones’s Diary if it were a sitcom.

What I love about the series is that Miranda is not your typical leading lady. She’s original and funny, and watching this female character find herself as the series progresses is lovely. Period drama fans may know the actress best as Chummy from Call the Midwife!

Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries (2012-2015)

Why You Should Watch: Miss Fisher may be one of the best female characters on TV. Beyond that, the show about a Private Detective in 1920s Australia is witty, entertaining, and has the most gorgeous costumes.

Not to mention, the slow-built romance between Private Investigator Phryne Fisher and Detective Jack Robinson is perfection. This Australian cozy mystery series embraces romance and ends every episode with a romantic moment between Miss Fisher and Jack.

There’s also an adorable romance between Miss Fisher’s wholesome assistant Dot and the handsome Inspector, Hugh. Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries is fun to watch and will make you want to buy a new wardrobe and wear red lipstick!

After watching the show, don’t forget to check out the Miss Fisher movie.

Moonlight (2007-2008)

Why You Should Watch: Moonlight, an urban fantasy series about a private detective vampire who falls in love with a human reporter, is one of my favorite romantic TV shows. There was just something about it I fell in love with. I still feel bummed over its unfair cancellation – despite decent ratings. Thankfully, for the most part, the show ends on a good note.

If you enjoy supernatural romance, Byronic Heroes, gothic literature, and urban fantasy, you should watch Moonlight. The series has a great wit (relatively dry), with Alex O’Loughlin playing the dreamiest and most gentlemanly vampire thus far.

Sophia Myles plays the perfect match to O’Loughlin as their chemistry sizzles. To add to the romance, Moonlight has unique and rich vampire mythology steeped in French Royal vampires amid the French Revolution.

As a bonus, Veronica Mars fans should appreciate Jason Dohring as Josef (Mick’s vampire best friend) and his signature snark. This is a show I can watch time and time again, and it never gets old.

Sure, some procedural elements aren’t fantastic, but the old-fashioned romance, characters, relationships, and mythology will make you fall in love with it.

Content Note: TV-14 for vampire violence and sensuality. The central romance is old-fashioned in style.

My Love From Another Star (2013)

Why You Should Watch: Roswell fans, another romantic alien story is out there! A massive international hit, My Love From Another Star, is fantastic and a joy to watch. While the show’s theme song takes some adjusting to (the song’s pretty cheesy), the show itself is exciting.

With romantic scene after romantic scene, you’ll find yourself rooting for this grumpy immortal alien and the movie star he falls in love with. Lovers of period dramas will also appreciate the flashbacks to his past life and why he becomes drawn to this woman in the present day.

Once Upon a Time (2011-2018)

Why You Should Watch: Once Upon a Time takes place in a Maine town where fairy tale characters are cursed to forget their lives by an evil queen.

What makes the show worth watching are the various old-fashioned (for the most part) romances influenced by fairy tales. It’s an uplifting series full of adventure and romance.

Content Note: TV-PG (at times closer to TV-14).

The Originals (2013-2018)/The Vampire Diaries (2009-2017)

Why You Should Watch: I combined these two shows because they’re from the same universe. Both series are incredibly entertaining and perfect for fans of paranormal romance, Byronic Heroes, and gothic love stories.

The Vampire Diaries follows Elena as she’s torn between two vampire brothers while The Originals shadows the original vampire family, the Mikaelsons, as they seek love, power, and family in New Orleans.

The Paradise (2012-2013)

Why You Should Watch: The Paradise follows an ambitious young woman who falls in love with the owner of the department store she works at.

If you’re looking for a fashionable costume drama with memorable characters, emotional stories, and an old-fashioned romance (based on a classic French novel), look no further than The Paradise. This is romantic period drama at its finest.

Poldark (2015-2019)

Why You Should Watch: 

Aidan Turner steals the show as the impassioned Ross Poldark in this fabulous historical drama about a man returning from war – only to find everyone he left behind totally changed.

If you’re searching for an epic historical romance series without all the explicit content, look no further than Poldark. It’s one of the best TV shows ever, with gorgeous scenery, music, fantastic actors, incredible scripts, swoony romantic moments, and more.

All in all, it’s one of the best romance TV shows on this list.

Pushing Daisies (2007-2009)

Why You Should Watch: Pushing Daisies comes from the creative mind of Bryan Fuller and tells the story of a pie shop owner who can raise people from the grave – an ability he uses to help solve crimes with a private detective. But he decides to keep his childhood sweetheart, Chuck, alive after she mysteriously dies. 

This unique fantasy series embraces what it really is: an urban fantasy rom-com. What’s great is that the two characters can never touch. Because if they do, Chuck dies again!

Ned and Chuck are one of the cutest and most adorable TV couples, and Pushing Daisies is one of the best-written shows. You’ll find yourself smiling from ear to ear and laughing out loud when you watch this charming series.

Roswell (1999-2002)

Why You Should Watch: Roswell follows three alien teenagers as they uncover the mystery of their roots while dealing with teen issues – like falling in love. The main story focuses on the star-crossed love story between Max and Liz. He risks exposing his secret to the world when he saves her life.

Roswell was my go-to teen romance back in the day. Thankfully, the quality of the romantic TV series stands the test of time, and teens (and anyone, really) should enjoy this show.

Ultimately, if you love YA, sci-fi, and paranormal romance, then you should watch Roswell – an example of how to do a teen show right. No surprise since the series was run by Jason Katims (Parenthood, Friday Night Lights) and Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica).

Scarlet Heart: Ryeo (2016)

Why You Should Watch: If you love time travel romance like that of Outlander but are looking for something less explicit, Scarlet Heart: Ryeo is perfect.

The show pulls you into a tale of intrigue, deception, and romance when a young woman travels back in time and finds herself entangled in love triangles with princes all vying for the throne…and for her attention.

Kurt Seyit and Sura (2014)

Why You Should Watch: This epic Turkish period drama of forbidden romance between a Russian woman and an army major is breathtakingly romantic. Even more intriguing about this high-budget series is that it’s based on a real-life true story.

You’ll be fascinated if you are intrigued by Russian and Turkish history (particularly during World War I and the Tsar’s fall).

You can also read about the real story as Kurt Seyit’s granddaughter wrote about their love story in a series of books. However, this is a true story from history, so don’t expect the stories to end the way you want.

She Was Pretty (2015)

Why You Should Watch: If you love shows like Ugly Betty, you’ll likely adore She Was Pretty. This series includes a love triangle at a fashion magazine where you feel torn over who she should choose.

If you were to take Gilbert Blythe from Anne of Green Gables and split him in two, you’d have these two guys! Ah, the dilemma.

This optimistic series will make you believe in love and happy endings (in both love and career) and leave you feeling inspired and good about yourself.

Ugly Betty (2006-2010)

Why You Should Watch: Ugly Betty is about a young aspiring writer working at a cutthroat fashion magazine.

Incredibly funny, Ugly Betty is also endearingly romantic and heartfelt. From her first real love with the adorable Henry to her time with the charming, adventurous Gio, and ultimately to the main slow build (VERY SLOW) romance between Betty and Daniel, there is a lot of romance to go around.

However, Betty’s not the only character with appealing love stories. Most of the main characters get their chance for love. But who will get their happy ending?

Victoria (2016-2019)

Why You Should Watch: If you’re fascinated by history, royals, and old-fashioned love stories, then watch this romantic TV series about a young Queen Victoria as she falls in love with Albert.

When a Snail Falls in Love (2016)

Why You Should Watch: The two leads are amazing together. Wang Kai proves he has star potential, as does the tiny force of nature, Wang Zi Wen. If you were to take Sherlock, make her a highly empathetic female, and then have her fall in love, you’d have the main character, Xu Xu.

On the other hand, you have the dreamy (and moody) Ji Bai, who kicks some major butt as a police detective.

As the two solve crimes together, they begin to fall in love. It’s remarkable how adorable these two are together amid some of the horrendous crimes around them (all of which connect by the end – so expect this series to be less procedural in style).

With high production quality, thrilling action scenes, and an unforgettable romance, you need to check out this wonderfully written Chinese series. If you enjoy romantic action thrillers and mystery, you should enjoy When a Snail Falls in Love.

When Calls the Heart (2014-)

Why You Should Watch: When an upper-class young schoolteacher moves to a small coal mining town, she finds friendship, purpose, and love.

If you love Hallmark films and uplifting romantic TV shows about small towns, you can’t go wrong with When Calls the Heart. The love/hate romance between Elizabeth and Jack that develops into a strong relationship is worth watching!

However, be prepared for lots of heartbreak despite its sweet style.

The X-Files (1993-2002; 2016-2018)

Why You Should Watch: To this day, The X-Files, about FBI agents investigating strange mysteries and alien conspiracies), is still one of the best TV shows of all time. There’s also a reason why many of the tv romances today were influenced by the kindred spirit romance between Scully and Mulder.

While their romance slowly builds over many seasons, their epic love is worth the wait. And believe me, if you haven’t watched this series, you should.

Ignoring the mostly missed 2008 film and a few weak episodes in the new seasons, overall, the writing is some of the best out there.

Not to mention, Scully and Mulder are the perfect example of how to present an old-fashioned romance within a sci-fi show, proving that you can portray a swoon-worthy love story in any genre. The Scully and Mulder romance is so strong it transcends genre.

Alias (2001-2006)

Why You Should Watch: Alias is a cult-favorite TV series about Sydney Bristow, a double agent spy trying to take down a corrupt organization. What starts as a spy drama turns into a conspiratorial fantasy-sci-fi series with a ton of romance and mystery.

While there’s much to love about this JJ Abrams show, it includes one of the best TV couples ever – Sydney and Vaughn – played by the always fantastic Jennifer Garner and Michael Vaughn.

Anne of Green Gables and Sequels / Road to Avonlea (1985, 1987; 2000)

Why You Should Watch: Anne of Green Gables is a beloved period miniseries that brings to life L.M. Montgomery’s classic children’s novel.

The Emmy-winning miniseries (and sequels) follows the orphan, Anne Shirley, as she grows into a young woman and finds love in family, friendship, and community while also developing a romance with her childhood friend, Gilbert Blythe.

On the other hand, Road to Avonlea is a spinoff series following Sara Stanley – the story girl, another young woman with a destiny in the fictional village. The show does include some of the same characters (and actors) – most notably Marilla and Rachel Lynde. It also has terrific love stories in it that are sweet and wholesome.

Avonlea continued in the same style as the Anne miniseries and won numerous awards – including four Primetime Emmys.

Arrow (And the rest of the Arrowverse) (2012-2020)

Why You Should Watch: 

Arrow is the show that started the popular Arrowverse on the CW. It also happens to be unabashedly romantic!

The billionaire playboy, Oliver Queen, returns a changed man after being lost at sea for five years. But he returns with an agenda: to get revenge and clean up his corrupt city.

There he starts “Team Arrow” with two members to help him fight corruption and villains: One is Felicity Smoak, an awkward, brilliant young woman working in IT at his family’s business.

Eventually, Oliver and Felicity fall in love after working together on missions. If you love romance, adventure, superheroes, and intelligent female characters, this show is for you.

I also recommend checking out the rest of the Arrowverse. The Flash, Superman and Lois, Legends of Tomorrow, etc., are also quite romantic.

The Baker and the Beauty (2020)

Why You Should Watch: 

The Baker and the Beauty is a fun rom-com series about a baker and a superstar who fall in love. While it only had one season, the series is sweet, thoughtful, and enjoyable.

With lovable characters and an adorable romance, this romantic dramedy is the perfect escape.

Battlestar Galactica (2004-2009)

Why You Should Watch: 

The Emmy-winning sci-fi series is considered one of the greatest shows of all time. When most of humanity is slaughtered by the Cylons, a small fleet of survivors tries to find Earth.

Besides the brilliant writing and acting, the show is full of unforgettable TV couples with emotional love stories.

Being Human (2008-2013)

Why You Should Watch: 

Being Human follows three supernatural roommates: a vampire, a ghost, and a werewolf, as they try to get along and become more human. While the premise sounds like a joke, the paranormal series has brilliant writing and acting.

It’s also intensely romantic and full of dark Romanticism. If you love Byronic heroes, you’ll love the romance between Mitchell (Aidan Turner) and Annie (Lenora Crichlow). It’s very Bronte-esque, with their souls connecting despite his dark nature.

I also recommend watching the U.S. remake, which is almost as good. It also has a happier ending.

Blood & Treasure (2019-2022)

Why You Should Watch: 

Blood & Treasure is a fun adventure-romance series about an art thief and an antiquities expert trying to catch a villain and unravel conspiracies while they fall in love.

It’s basically a more romantic version of National Treasure and is so entertaining to watch!

Bones (2005-2017)

Why You Should Watch: Part rom-com, part crime show, and part drama, Bones follows forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance Brennan (nicknamed Bones) and FBI Special Agent Booth as they investigate crimes together. Booth and Brennan have sparkling chemistry with a slow-burn romance central to the series.

You can’t even count the number of great romantic moments these two have. The supporting characters have meaningful love stories too.

While the procedural elements may be a bit cliché, the characters, and romances will keep you hooked.

Bridgerton (2020-)

Why You Should Watch: 

Bridgerton is based on the bestselling book series by Julia Quinn and follows the Bridgerton siblings as they find love in an alternate version of Regency England.

Season 1 focuses on the romance between the moody and swoony Duke of Hastings and the innocent Daphne Bridgerton. Meanwhile, the second season focuses on Anthony Bridgerton (the eldest brother) and his romance with the intelligent Kate Sharma.

With Lady Whistledown (Julie Andrews) narrating about London gossip with lots of snark, and other entertaining characters like Queen Charlotte, it’s hard not to be won over by this show.

Just be warned – it is very steamy.

Content Note: TV-MA for very explicit and steamy scenes with nudity – particularly in Season 1. Season 2 is less steamy, with only a couple of graphic love scenes.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003)

Why You Should Watch: 

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is the classic teen fantasy series about a teenager called to be “the Slayer” – a young woman destined to slay mythical creatures and demons. With the help of her Watcher (and mentor) and friends, she fights to destroy evil. The only problem is she falls in love with an immortal vampire with a soul.

The award-winning paranormal romance continues to influence genre shows today.

And while it’s not just a romantic show, it’s hard not to think of Buffy and not also consider the numerous romantic TV couples and who your favorites were. Were you team Angel and Buffy? Or Buffy and Spike?

Besides Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I also recommend checking out its excellent spinoff, Angel.

Call the Midwife (2012-)

Why You Should Watch: Each season takes place over a year, starting in the late 1950s, depicting the lives of midwives and a group of nuns in East London. While Call the Midwife doesn’t get much attention in the U.S., it’s one of the best shows currently on television.

While the brilliant writing and character development keep viewers watching, the show also includes numerous emotional love stories.

Castle (2009-2016)

Why You Should Watch: 

Like Bones, Castle puts the romantic relationship between a crime-solving duo at its center – this time between a bestselling author and an NYC Detective.

It’s a fun series, especially for the Castle/Beckett romance. Plus, Nathan Fillion always entertains with his quippy performances.

C.B. Strike (2017-)

Why You Should Watch: If you love cerebral British crime shows with emotional, slow-burn love stories, then C.B. Strike is the show for you.

It chronicles a war veteran turned private investigator and his working relationship/friendship with her new assistant (later turned partner) as they solve mysteries together.

The chemistry between Cormoran and Robin is intense! The mysteries are good too.

Charmed (1998-2006)

Why You Should Watch: 

When three sisters discover they’re witches with a destiny (called the Charmed Ones), they fight against the supernatural evils of the world. While they deal with numerous complications, they also find romance along the way.

The best romantic couple from Charmed is Piper and Leo (an angelic whitelighter). But other memorable couples include Phoebe and Cole, Prue and Andy, and Paige and Henry.

Chasing Life (2014-2015)

Why You Should Watch: 

April Carver’s world is thrown upside down when she discovers she has cancer. But when she realizes she may only have a limited amount of time left to live, she learns the real meaning of life.

Chasing Life is an underrated gem that is a part family drama and part romantic drama – as she also finds love with Leo – another cancer patient.

The April and Leo love story is beautiful to watch onscreen. Just bring some tissues!

Dawson’s Creek (1997-2003)

Why You Should Watch: 

Dawson’s Creek is the classic teen romance series from the WB that catapulted its core cast into stars. The show follows four friends as they come of age in a small town. They each find romance and try to follow their dreams.

While the series is now known for its memes and actors, it’s easy to forget how good and groundbreaking the show was. Dawson’s Creek is teen romance at its best, with solid writing, characters, and TV couples you can’t help but root for.

Desperate Housewives (2004-2012)

Why You Should Watch: 

Desperate Housewives is a brilliant mishmash of numerous genres, including comedy, satire, romance, drama, and mystery, and follows the women of a suburban neighborhood as they deal with secrets, romance, and mysteries.

The show is hilarious but also emotionally satisfying. It’s an escapist treat everyone who loves satire and romance should see.

A Discovery of Witches (2018-2022)

Why You Should Watch: 

Diana Bishop is a witch and a historian – but tries to ignore her witch side. That changes when she discovers Ashmole 782, a book that may hold the secrets to the origins of witches and other supernaturals like vampires and demons.

She then crosses paths with the mysterious and intelligent vampire, Matthew. Diana and Matthew work together to find the book and fall in love – despite the rule against vampires and witches being in relationships.

A Discovery of Witches is an example of how to do a fantasy romance and a book adaptation right. With stellar casting, strong writing, and a swoony love story spanning across time (they time travel in Season 2), this show is as epic as it gets.

Content Note: TV-MA for fantasy violence, explicit sensuality, and some profanity. It’s a mild TV-MA, with some episodes feeling closer to TV-14.

Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman (1993-1999)

Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman is a wholesome family western about a female doctor in a small town. With Jane Seymour bringing her charisma to the role and a sweet love story between Dr. Quinn and Sully, this award-winning series continues to charm.

Drop Dead Diva (2009-2014)

Why You Should Watch: 

When a young model dies in a car accident and is brought back to life, she discovers her soul is now inside an overweight lawyer instead of her original body. She must now learn to love her new self and live differently.

If you loved Legally Blonde, you’ll love this romantic comedy series. It’s all about true love.

Emma (2009)

Why You Should Watch: 

The Emmy-winning adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel tells the story of Emma Woodhouse, a wealthy young woman causing mischief when she starts playing matchmaker.

Emma has an all-star cast including Romola Garai, Jonny Lee Miller, Michael Gambon, and more, and because of its length, it takes the necessary time to portray the love story between Emma and Mr. Knightley.

All in all, Emma’s a pure delight from start to finish.

Eureka (2006-2012)

Why You Should Watch: 

If you love cozy small-town shows, sci-fi, and romantic comedies, you can’t go wrong with the underrated show Eureka.

When a U.S. Marshall becomes the new sheriff of the strange town of Eureka, he discovers a village full of the greatest minds working on revolutionary inventions.

It’s funny, romantic, and just plain entertaining.

Everwood (2002-2006)

Why You Should Watch: 

A world-famous brain surgeon moves from Manhattan to a small Colorado town with his two children on a whim after losing his wife in an accident. While the family initially struggles to fit in, they find their home in this unexpected place.

The family drama has some of the best writing ever on network television and is also unapologetically romantic.

Each season has different romantic couples to root for, from teen love stories to adults.

Farscape (1999-2003)

Why You Should Watch: 

This Australian/American co-production includes one of the best sci-fi love stories. An astronaut from Earth accidentally enters a wormhole and ends up in a distant section of the universe. There, he becomes part of a fugitive starship crew and falls in love with Aeryn Sun, a pilot.

Watch this fan-favorite pair if you want to see sci-fi romance done right.

Felicity (1998-2002)

A freshman in college decides to attend the same university as her high school crush. The coming-of-age romantic drama stars Keri Russell in a now iconic series about a young woman trying to find herself.

And while the acting and writing are good, fans still debate who Felicity should have ended up with – Ben, her high school crush, or Noel, her RA.

When you watch, you’ll have to decide: are you team Ben or team Noel? Ah, the dilemma of this classic love triangle.

Fringe (2008-2013)

Why You Should Watch: 

An FBI agent, a quirky scientist, and his son join together to investigate unexplained phenomena.

The intriguing and fun plot twists will draw you in, but the characters (Walter is the best!) and the love story between Peter and Olivia will make you want to stick around.

Ultimately, Fringe is one of those shows that found the perfect cast to deliver its compelling and entertaining story.

Galavant (2015-2016)

Why You Should Watch: 

Dan Fogelman, the writer behind This is Us and Tangled, brings this fantasy rom-com musical to the small screen about a down-on-his-luck knight abandoned by his true love. A princess asks for his help, and together, they go on a quest to save the kingdom from a tyrant and very childish king.

Galavant is basically a satire of Disney musicals – but it remains sweet with a happy ending!

It’s all very romantic, funny, and heartwarming—a truly underrated gem of perfection.

Gossip Girl (2007-2012)

Why You Should Watch: 

Wealthy high school students from the Upper East Side of Manhattan try to uncover who Gossip Girl is, the mysterious blogger watching them from afar and reporting on their lives.

Gossip Girl is a soapy, romantic teen drama with a fantastic cast and entertaining episodes. This is a teen show done right.

Grey’s Anatomy (2005-)

Why You Should Watch: 

Grey’s Anatomy is a medical romance drama that keeps on giving! The show about surgical interns and their romantic lives at a Seattle hospital has become a pop culture phenomenon and is still going strong.

One of the aspects of the show that makes it so popular is the dozens of romances presented over the years. Of course, nothing will ever top the signature love story of Derek and Meredith! But everyone should find a couple to root for. Just don’t always expect happy endings.

Healer (2014-2015)

Why You Should Watch: 

A fighter, a reporter, and a journalist work together to uncover a decades-long secret and conspiracy. Healer is one of the best romantic K-dramas I’ve seen. It perfectly blends romance, action, comedy, drama, and politics in what is an addictive show you won’t be able to stop watching.

It also has pretty swoony romantic moments, including an unexpected kiss in the snow!

Jane Eyre (1983, 2006)

Why You Should Watch: 

While there are numerous TV adaptations of Jane Eyre, these two are the best and most well-known! Jane Eyre is the classic Charlotte Bronte story about an orphan who falls in love with her moody employer, Mr. Rochester.

Jane Eyre is one of the greatest stories of all time and is an example of gothic romance done right.

If you love deeply emotional stories with Byronic Heroes, hidden secrets, three-dimensional female characters, authentic love stories, and good old-fashioned storytelling, you can’t go wrong with Jane Eyre.

The 1983 series starred Timothy Dalton and Zelah Clarke, while the 2006 one starred Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens. Both are brilliant.

The heartwarming series follows a teenage girl moving from Lark Rise’s small, poor town to the wealthier town next door, Candleford, to help a family member run a post office.

With love, family, romance, friendship, and community at its center, Lark Rise to Candleford is the show you never knew you needed!

The Librarians (2014-2018)

Why You Should Watch: 

Time-traveling librarians work together to save ancient artifacts worldwide and throughout time. Romance fans, however, will appreciate the sweet love story between Eve and Flynn!

Little Dorrit (2008)

Soon, she crosses paths with her employer’s son, Arthur Clennam – and her whole life changes.

With a top-notch cast of incredible British talents (including Claire Foy and Matthew Macfadyen) and an emotional love story, Little Dorrit is not a miniseries to skip!

Lost in Austen (2008)

Why You Should Watch: 

Janeite, Amanda Price from modern-day London, magically switches places with Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice. She soon starts falling in love with Mr. Darcy.

Lost in Austen is pure escapist fun – and is a must–see for every Austen fan! Who doesn’t imagine falling in love with a Mr. Darcy of their own?

Lucifer (2016-2021)

Lucifer is an urban fantasy/paranormal romance series about Lucifer Morningstar, the leader of Hell, who decides he wants to take a vacation in Los Angeles. There he meets Detective Chloe Dekker. Together they investigate crimes while also falling in love.

With plenty of captivating worldbuilding, enjoyable characters, and witty scripts, Lucifer is an absolute treat. But what makes it particularly strong is the powerful love story between Chloe and Lucifer.

Ultimately, Lucifer is the best kind of urban fantasy for television because it doesn’t ignore the central romance aspect vital to the genre.

Madam Secretary (2014-2019)

Why You Should Watch: 

Madam Secretary was not advertised for what the show really is: an optimistic political romance drama. Tea Leoni and Tim Daly star in this series about the Secretary of State as she deals with her work and family life.

The show is so romantic that it even ended with HEAs for all the characters!

Merlin (2008-2012)

Why You Should Watch: 

Merlin follows the adventures of the sorcerer Merlin and his friendship with Prince Arthur. Much like Smallville, the show begins following the story of how each character becomes a legend.

Unlike Smallville, however, Merlin shows the actual legend in later seasons. Besides being a fun (and frequently hilarious) family show, it also includes a few epic romances to root for. I have a particular soft spot for Santiago Cabrera’s interpretation of Lancelot and his romance with Gwen.

Miss Scarlet and the Duke (2020-)

Why You Should Watch: 

Aspiring private detective, Eliza Scarlet, starts her own agency in Victorian England. Often, she solves mysteries with her childhood friend turned Scotland Yard Inspector – William “The Duke” Wellington.

Miss Scarlet and the Duke includes one of the best TV couples currently airing on television. While they haven’t become an official couple yet, their smoldering chemistry will keep fans hooked as the slow burn plays out onscreen!

Mr. Selfridge (2013-2016)

Why You Should Watch: 

Mr. Selfridge loosely follows the real-life story of Mr. Harry Selfridge – the founder of the famous department store. The romantic period drama series chronicles the lives of his family and those working at the store.

With Andrew Davies (Pride and Prejudice, 1995) running the show, you know you’re in a treat with superb writing, memorable love stories (one of my favorites is the Agnes and Henri romance), and compelling characters.

Mr. Sunshine (2018)

Why You Should Watch: 

Mr. Sunshine is a historical romance drama about a US Marine Corps officer (from Korea who then grew up in the United States) and his romance with a Korean noblewoman fighting for independence.

If tragic love stories are your cup of tea, Mr. Sunshine is a brilliant example of the genre. It’s also one of the best Korean dramas on Netflix to watch.

The Nanny (1993-1999)

Why You Should Watch: 

Fran Drescher stars in the iconic rom-com sitcom, The Nanny, about a cosmetics saleswoman who becomes the nanny of three children for a wealthy English Broadway producer. Of course, the two fall in love – but not without constant hilarious antics keeping them apart.

Regarding rom-com sitcoms, some of the more famous examples include Friends, How I Met Your Mother, Who’s the Boss, etc., but my favorite is The Nanny. It never ceases to make me laugh every time.

But what makes it even better is that the romance between Fran and Maxwell is actually swoony! The two actors have strong chemistry too.

North and South (2004)

Why You Should Watch: 

North and South is arguably the greatest romantic period drama of all time. Based on Elizabeth Gaskell’s classic love story, North and South follows the story of Margaret Hale, a young Englishwoman from the South who her family forces to move to the North. There, she clashes with the handsome young businessman, John Thornton, over personal and political matters.

Richard Armitage brings passion to the Romantic Hero role, while Daniela Denby-Ashe brings likability and compassion. Together, the two actors sparkle onscreen!

With an artistic style, gorgeous costumes, cinematography, brilliant dialogue, perfect performances, and numerous swoony romantic moments, North and South is the epitome of what a romantic period drama should be.

Ultimately, North and South is a romance with a social conscience.

Outlander (2014-)

Why You Should Watch: 

Outlander follows the story of Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe), a WWII nurse who accidentally travels back in time to the 18th century and falls in love with Jamie Fraser, a young and handsome Scottish man.

While I think the show is unnecessarily graphic, I would be remiss if I didn’t include this powerful series due to the epic love story between Claire and Jamie!

If you love time travel series, good writing, and acting, are drawn to mythology, folklore, and historical details, and don’t mind the explicit content (which can be quite disturbing), Outlander is certainly one of the most unabashedly romantic shows available.

Content Note: TV-MA for graphic violence, a moderate amount of profanity, nudity, severe and disturbing assault scenes, and explicit steamy lovemaking.

Pride and Prejudice (1995)

Why You Should Watch: 

Pride and Prejudice is the iconic and timeless adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic love story of the witty Elizabeth Bennet and her interactions with the prideful and wealthy Mr. Darcy.

While there have been numerous Pride and Prejudice adaptations, the Andrew Davies version continues to impress as the best of the bunch. Colin Firth is also arguably the best (undoubtedly the most iconic) Mr. Darcy.

If you appreciate more cerebral romances with a classic style, Pride and Prejudice truly is one of the finest examples of what unabashed romance looks like without becoming cheesy.

Primeval (2007-2011)

Why You Should Watch: 

Primeval is a British fantasy/sci-fi series about a scientist and his team as they track down anomalies around England where prehistoric creatures enter through an open portal.

This fun show has lots of time travel, romance, adventure, and mystery! Doctor Who fans should like it. While it does end on a cliffhanger due to early cancellation, I still recommend watching. It’s worth the ride.

Plus, it leaves room for interpretation and fan theories.

Reign (2013-2017)

Why You Should Watch: 

More historical fantasy than historical drama, Reign is an entertaining look at the life and loves of the young Mary, Queen of Scots, as she deals with the treachery of the French court.

If you expect historical accuracy, you won’t enjoy the CW show. But if you go in expecting a fun ride with creative costumes, captivating romances, plenty of scheming and villainy, and standout performances from the cast (particularly Megan Follows and Craig Parker), then you’ll probably love it as much as I did!

Robin Hood (2006-2009)

Why You Should Watch: 

Robin Hood is a British adventure show with a heavy dose of romance, comedy, and drama. Robin Rood returns to England after fighting in the Crusades and stands against the villainous Sheriff of Nottingham.

Of course, you can also expect a love triangle with Robin, Marian, and the redeemable bad boy, Guy of Gisborne – played by the always fabulous Richard Armitage.

While the show takes some unfortunate tragic turns, the central romance in the show is an absolute joy to watch.

Plus, there’s always Richard Armitage and his smolder.

Salvation (2017-2018)

Why You Should Watch: 

Salvation is an underrated two-season romantic sci-fi show starring Santiago Cabrera, Jennifer Finnigan, and Ian Anthony Dale about a group investigating an asteroid that will collide with Earth in six months.

What I love about this series is the surprising romance element. The show has an adult and intelligent woman stuck in a love triangle between Cabrera and Dale. Hmmm. Is it worth watching? So much, yes!

Sanditon (2019-2023)

Why You Should Watch: 

Jane Austen’s unfinished novel loosely inspires Sanditon. It follows the heroine, Charlotte Heywood, and her romantic entanglements in a small seaside resort town.

The romantic series has a devoted fan base, and is witty, entertaining, and, yes, very romantic. It does include some infuriating cliffhangers, however!

Schmigadoon! (2021-)

Why You Should Watch: 

Melissa and Josh go on a backpacking trip to help their struggling relationship, only to end up in a magical town where everyone sings and behaves like they’re in an old Hollywood musical.

Schmigadoon! is funny, stylish, and romantic, with catchy original tunes you can’t forget.

If you like classic musicals and unique shows like Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, this is for you. The choreography and songs are simply outstanding!

Sense & Sensibility (2008)

Why You Should Watch: 

Jane Austen’s novel about sisters Eleanor and Marianne Dashwood comes to life in this story about life and love. The Dashwood women struggle in society after their father’s passing leaves them without an inheritance.

The classic story of Sense & Sensibility is beautifully told in this BBC miniseries. It has an outstanding cast, superb writing, beautiful costumes, and emotional, romantic moments.

Shadowhunters (2016-2019)

Why You Should Watch: 

When Clary Fray’s mother goes missing, Clary discovers a hidden world of demons and angels, realizing that everything she thought she knew was wrong. She soon gets caught up in the world of Shadowhunters and ultimately becomes one herself.

Based on the bestselling book series, Shadowhunters centers on the love story between Clary and Jace. But the supporting characters have memorable romances too.

Fans of paranormal romance and urban fantasy should like this show. It’s a fun treat full of Romanticism.

Smallville (2001-2011)

Why You Should Watch: 

Smallville tells the story of a young Clark Kent before he becomes Superman. It’s a small-town fantasy drama with a significant emphasis on romance for each character. 

While I still have complicated feelings about the show due to some creative choices in the later seasons, it’s hard to deny how influential Smallville continues to be. And when it aired, there was something fun about debating which Smallville TV couple was your favorite and who should end up with who!

Sweet Magnolias (2020-)

Why You Should Watch: 

Sweet Magnolias is a charming romantic drama about three best friends supporting each other in life, love, and family in a small, Southern South Carolina town.

This Netflix show is pure comfort viewing with likable characters, enjoyable stories, idyllic scenery, and sweet romances. The series stars JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Heather Headley, and Brooke Elliott.

This Is Us (2016-2022)

Why You Should Watch: 

This Is Us is the type of show that moves you and will likely stay with you for years. The family/romantic drama is a multigenerational story that follows the Pearson family in the past, present, and future.

It’s become one of the best shows to ever air on television with twisty writing, emotional stories, heartbreaking tragedies, authentic love stories, and all told with performances that will capture your heart.

Romance-wise, there are many fantastic TV couples from the show: Jack and Rebecca, Randall and Beth, Kate and Toby, and so many more (I’d say more, but it’s too spoilery!)

Tom Jones (2023)

Why You Should Watch: 

The new PBS Masterpiece adaptation of the Tom Jones book is a pure rom-com delight. It’s a comedy of manners with a talented British cast that will make you laugh out loud from start to finish.

The miniseries reimagines the classic novel about a young man trying to find himself in life and society – despite his rough beginnings. He falls in love with Sophia, a wealthy and innocent young biracial woman struggling to fit in due to her background (her mother was enslaved).

The central love story is adorable, and despite Jones’s failings as a young man, you can’t help rooting for these two to come together by the end.

I also recommend watching this show for the supporting characters. When you have actors like Shirley Henderson, Hannah Waddingham, Alun Armstrong, James Fleet, Pearl Mackie, and Tamzin Merchant involved, you know you’re in for a treat.

Virgin River (2019-)

Why You Should Watch: 

Virgin River is a romantic drama based on the bestselling book series by Robyn Carr. This show’s all about the characters and how they overcome difficulties to become stronger.

The love story between Jack and Mel is lovely! Although, the romance between Hope and Vernon is also fantastic.

WandaVision (2021)

Why You Should Watch: 

WandaVision is a unique TV series about the romantic relationship between Wanda and Vision told through the lens of classic sitcoms.

The limited series was a brilliant addition to the Marvelverse – and certainly the most innovative. But the tragic love story between Vision and Wanda is one of the key reasons the show works so well.

The Way Home (2023-)

Why You Should Watch: 

The Way Home is a new muti-generational Hallmark series with a time travel twist. The show follows the lives of the three Landry women – switching between the late 90s and the present day.

It’s closer in style to the classic Hallmark Hall of Fame films of the past than the recent Hallmark romance movies. But romance fans won’t be disappointed as it also makes sure to include memorable love stories for each of the Landry women.

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist (2020-2021)

Why You Should Watch: 

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist is a comedy, romance, and musical drama about a young woman who discovers she can hear other people’s inner thoughts through song and dance.

The series deals with Zoey coming to terms with losing her father, growing in her career, and finding love.

The show is a rom-com at its heart despite the sad parts. Ultimately, it’s a lovely, heartwarming, funny, and emotional show.
