One aspect of the series that had many of us biting our nails in anticipation was the status of Luke and Lorelai’s relationship. After 9 years, are they married? Engaged? Still together? On the rocks? Or even broken up? While the relationship between mother and daughter (and then by extension grandmother) was the heart and center of the series, certainly the romance between Luke and Lorelai wasn’t far behind.

Thankfully, as the series started we quickly learned that Luke and Lorelai were, in fact, still together. But not without some familiar problems still left unresolved. Not to mention, they still haven’t had that wedding Lorelai dreamed of.

THE BUILD UP – LUKE AND LORELAI

Gilmore Girls

Throughout A Year in the Life, Lorelai finds herself questioning her life, her relationships, and her job. And feeling at a crossroads, she decides to go Wild – book style that is. She heads out on her own to find herself in nature.

However, since this is Lorelai we’re talking about, she never actually ends up hiking or even roughing it at all. Lorelai, fittingly enough, has her epiphany by going to buy a cup of coffee and looking over a hill! Unfortunately, Luke is left behind believing Lorelai plans to leave him.

Which brings us to the romantic moment of the week!

THE ROMANTIC MOMENT

Lorelai returns home ready to share her “epiphany” with Luke. But he’s so distressed at the prospect of losing her he refuses to listen and breaks out into one of the greatest romantic speeches to ever be on a TV Show.

Luke decides to fight for Lorelai and pleads with her not to leave him and gives all the reasons why.

“We have been through too much here, you and me, okay?” Luke tells Lorelai. He never thought in his wildest dreams that they would happen. But they did.

And as the two banter back and forth like pros, Lorelai soaks in how much he loves her. And then Luke pulls out all the stops, making all of us wish we had a guy like Luke:

“I know I am not the easiest guy in the world to build a life with and to share a house with but there is no one who will be more here for you than me. I will never leave. I will never think about leaving. I will do whatever it takes to fix what’s wrong.”

As he continues, Luke points out how they have watched each other go from person to person and it was awful. And then he leaves it with these words:“I mean, you can’t leave. You just…you just can’t leave.”

Finally, Lorelai interrupts and reveals what her epiphany was. “Luke – I think we should get married.” (A lovely throwback to Lorelai’s proposal in season 5.)

“What?” Luke asks in surprise.

“We’ve waited way too long,” Lorelai tells him (pretty much saying what all of us are thinking).

Lorelai then reveals that she has it all planned out. The date, location, everything basically, is all set! Luke, being Luke, then leaves the room in a hurry leaving behind a now worried Lorelai. But her mind is quickly put at ease when he returns with an engagement ring.

As he puts the ring back on Lorelai’s finger, Luke ends the moment with his typical dry humor:

“Just gotta tell ya before this thing goes on, you got to realize the only way out is in a body bag.”

“Now we don’t have to write our vows,” Lorelai responds with her usual quick wit perfectly summing up the relationship between the two.

They then share one of their best kisses to date!

And then later, of course, Luke and Lorelai finally have that dream fairy-tale wedding. And it’s perfect.

BONUS ROMANTIC MOMENT

While there weren’t many scenes between Rory and Jess, it became clear there are some parallels between Rory and Lorelai, which hints at Rory’s future. Romance wise, Logan is a parallel to Christopher while Jess is a parallel to Luke. So, I think we can all guess what that means. As Jess leaves at the end, he pauses for a moment to stare through the window longingly at Rory. I think it’s safe to say that if the story were to continue, Rory and Jess will become the next Luke and Lorelai. And I think there’s something sweet about that.
