#1 Dil Bole Hadippa
All Veera wants to do is play cricket in the big leagues. Except Women don’t play cricket nationally. So Veera disguises herself as a guy and joins the team. Her biggest problem, besides getting caught with her lie – she’s falling in love with her coach.
I love actress Rani Mukerji and she really shines here in this role! I’d classify this film as She’s The Man meets Bollywood. There are a lot of funny moments with Rani’s hilarious attempt at playing a guy, as well as a heartfelt story of a woman defying expectations. The music is fabulous with loads of catchy songs. I’ve re-watched this one a few times and it continues to delight.
#2 Bunty Aur Babli
Rakesh and Vimmi both have big dreams – Rakesh wants to start a business while Vimmi wants to be Miss India. The reality is harsh and both of them are devastated when they realize the unlikeliness of that happening. When they con someone who tricked them out of money, a new passion is born…
Part Bonnie and Clyde story, part heist/con story, this is a fun and zippy movie. It gets a little serious at the end as the consequences of their actions finally catch up with them, but overall it’s a feel-good, light-hearted flick that entertains.
Zooni is a blind girl used to living in the countryside. She comes to Delhi for a dance performance with her friends and meets the dangerously charming Rehan. Her friends don’t like him but Zooni falls head over heels. Just when things are getting serious, the couple is separated. Years later, Rehan stumbles back into Zooni’s life. But there’s something about Rehan that could destroy everything…
It’s really hard to give a description of this movie without giving everything away. There are some huge twists and turns in this film. It’s definitely a drama that leaves you quite emotional by the end. Kajol and Aamir Khan have gorgeous chemistry onscreen. I adore so many of the songs in here with my favorite being “Mere Haath Mein.” If you’re in for an intriguing and intense tale, this is for you!
#4 Hum Tum
Karan and Rhea are complete opposites. He’s a carefree playboy; she’s opinionated but more about following the rules. They meet while traveling and though Karan’s interested in her, Rhea doesn’t reciprocate. Over the years, they run into each other unexpectedly. Could love ever be in their future?
Another light and energetic story, Hum Tum delivers a cute romance. While initially I didn’t like Karan that much, by the end I was rooting for the couple completely.
#5 Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na
Jai and Aditi are best friends who go to college together. They’re so close that everybody, including their families, think they’re going to marry eventually. Jai and Aditi swear they’re only friends. But when Jai gets a girlfriend, Aditi realizes her best friend may be more than just a friend…
I love this upbeat, cutesy movie so much! Jai and Aditi are adorable as best buddies and watching them slowly realize their feelings for each other is both heartbreaking and sweet (and who doesn’t love romances that come from two best friends??).
#6 Jab We Met
Aditya, despite being affluent, is drowning in depression. One night he wanders off and gets on a train. There he meets Geet, a happy, chatty girl who drives him crazy. They end up traveling together and before he knows it, Aditya feels alive again. He’s falling in love with Geet… but she has someone else in her heart.
A hit back in 2007, both in India and overseas, it’s easy to see why. Jab We Met has all the classic elements of great rom-coms. There’s a humorous train meeting, misadventures along the way, and funny bickering between the adorable couple. Plus, it’s a blast watching Aditya transform from a deeply depressed guy who just up and left everything to a guy who found a reason to really live – and all because of the crazy, loveable Geet.
#7 Jodhaa Akbar
Jodhaa, a Rajput princess, is devastated when her betrothal to a Rajput king is tossed aside and instead she is given to Mugal Emperor Akbar for a peace treaty. Angry at being a marriage pawn, Jodhaa wants nothing to do with Akbar and he keeps his distance for her sake. Slowly, though, Jodhaa’s heart is won by the compassionate, wise young king.
This is an absolutely gorgeous period drama with so much pretty! I’ve always been a sucker for arranged-marriages-leading-to-true-romance stories and Jodhaa Akbar brings an achingly beautiful story. And the music is magical. It also stars Aishwarya Rai whose starred in some international films like Bride and Prejudice and The Last Legion.
#8 Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
Rahul and Anjali are college students and best friends. When Rahul falls in love with gorgeous Tina, tomboy Anjali is heartbroken and leaves. Years later, Rahul is widowed with a daughter. Tina has left a bunch of letters explaining to her daughter about Rahul’s first love… because she wants her daughter to bring the couple back together.
Cheesy, adorable fun, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is hilariously ‘90s dated, which is half of its charm. Bollywood power couple Rajul and Shah Rukh Khan once again bring their magnetic chemistry and remind us why we love them so much.
Zaara is a Pakistani girl in India on a mission – to bury the ashes of her governess. She meets Air Force Pilot Veer who helps her out. They fall quickly in love but Zaara has to return to Pakistan. Veer eventually shows up unable to forget about her – but Zaara’s family is vehemently against her marrying a man from India. Veer ends up paying an enormous cost for his love.
There’s nothing like star-crossed epic love stories! Veer-Zaara has a wonderful cast including Bollywood prince Shah Rukh Khan who portrays the most selfless, caring hero to ever grace the silver screen. Bring your tissues.
Poonam is a sweet, very quiet girl. Her uncle sets up an arranged marriage for her with a very sweet young man, Prem. Poonam agrees and through their engagement, they slowly get to know one another and fall in love. Poonam’s life would be complete if only her bitter aunt would stop hating her.
Vivah is a really sweet, understated film that brings a slow-burn romantic story to life. Prem and Poonam are both precious, very soft-spoken and sweet. It’s almost a Cinderella story with Poonam being hated by her aunt because she thinks she’s prettier than her daughter. The climax is really the only part in the movie where something dramatic happens. Overall it’s a relaxing, sweet film that leaves one smiling because of the power of true love.
