Romantic Moment of the Week: Juliette and Avery – A Wedding Surprise

THE SHOW: Nashville

THE PAIRING: Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere) and Avery Barkley (Jonathan Jackson)

THE EPISODE: “First to Have a Second Chance” – (aired December 10, 2014)

THE MOMENT: Avery makes a surprise proposal to Juliette and they quickly tie the knot.

Juliette and Avery have had a rocky relationship almost from the start. But there was something that made sense between these two. They both even helped make each other better! But when Juliette grew jealous of the closeness he shared with his ex Scarlett, she made a huge mistake and slept with Jeff Fordham (a real piece of work) in a moment of self-destructive behavior. Well, it didn’t take long for Avery to find out and then break things off; she did cheat on him after all. Since then, the two have had their ups and downs from hatred, anger and ultimately friendship after they discovered they were having a baby girl together. But is friendship enough for these two when it’s obvious their love still runs deep?

It’s that very question the writers of Nashville explored in this week’s mid-season finale “First to Have a Second Chance.” And it’s also the same question that leads to this week’s chosen romantic moment.

With a baby on the way, the two have struggled to make their “friendship” work. And at the beginning of the episode, Juliette even goes as far as to give Avery his old key back so he can temporarily move back in while they take care of the baby together. Yeah, this probably isn’t the best idea.

Later, Avery talks to his mother on the phone as she points out that his relationship with Juliette doesn’t matter. What matters is being there for his daughter. It’s in this moment that Avery seems to have an epiphany. But what exactly is his epiphany?

THE ROMANTIC MOMENT – JULIETTE AND AVERY

Avery heads over to Juliette’s place and throws a few boxes down in frustration. “You okay?” Juliette asks concerned.

Agitated, he answers in return: “No, I’m not….Look I-I can’t do this anymore, Juliette. I thought we could be friends for the sake of the baby.”

She tries to interrupt him, fearing where the conversation is headed. “Avery, please,” she says walking toward him. But he continues.

“Believe me, I’ve tried, but it’s impossible. It doesn’t work.”

Fearing the worst, she asks, “What do you want to do?”

And then Avery tells her the most surprising answer possible:

“I-I want you to marry me!”

With that, a look of complete surprise washes over Juliette’s face. “What?” Juliette asks.

“Just say yes!” Avery demands with adoration and hope on his face. The fear melts away from Juliette’s face only to be replaced with absolute joy. She thought her mistake had made her lose Avery forever, but now they have their second chance. And then he kisses her!

“Yes…yes!” Juliette answers.

But the surprise doesn’t end there.

At the end of the episode, Juliette and Avery exchange rings and wed in a private ceremony.

I’d say it looks like smooth sailing for these two…for a while anyway.

Were you surprised by the sudden marriage of Juliette and Avery? Were you happy with the wedding? Or do you think there should have been a longer build up? Or maybe you’re an Avery/Scarlett fan… Let me know your thoughts in the comments!
