Today we’re thrilled to have the amazing novelist, Julia Suzuki of the popular novel The Land of Dragor:Book 1: The Gift of Charms here to take our test! So please give Julia a nice hello and read her great answers below to get to know more about her and her books.
What is your favorite book, movie and/or TV show?
That has to be ‘The Voice’. The show has great energy and I love to hear great vocal talent.
What movie/TV show or book character turns you on?
A character that I found engaging is Forrest Bondurant from the movie Lawless, ~ the mumbling bootlegger with a surprisingly soft centre. I like kindness. I believe it is the greatest of all qualities.
What character turns you off?
Now, let me give that some thought. It will have to be a fictional character. I therefore pick, ‘The Wicked Witch of the West’, from the Wizard of Oz; she is seriously scary.
*A little secret to add here; I have often thought bad witches exist in real life too (don’t we all think we have met a few). Those people who try steal the good things in your life, through very clever manipulation. I wish there was an anti-witch device 🙂 Life is more similar to fairytales than we realise!
Is there any kind of music or any songs that inspire you?
I take two or three ‘Body Balance’ classes a week: a mixture of advanced yoga and pilates. I love the epic/empowering music that is played during this workout. One song that I think is really pretty is by Rhye and is called ‘Open’.
Is there any movie or TV couple past or present that you obsess over?
I think obsess is too extreme a word for me, but I have always been a great fan of ‘Dirty Dancing’! Nothing beats the ‘don’t put baby in the corner’ line at the end of the movie.
If you could be or live as any character (book/movie/TV show) who would you choose?
Cleopatra or Tinkerbell, a mixture of the two could be interesting ~ now there is an idea.
What are you reading and/or watching right now?
‘Fire’ by Kirsten Cashmore.
Any guilty pleasures?
Burger King!
If you could be any animal, what would you be and why?
A dolphin because they are fun, playful, free- spirited and kind. I’d like to think of them with romantic notion that when they knew they had met the right dolphin they would stay together for all time :).
If you could see one book adapted into a movie or TV show what would it be?
I think the best scripts usually get adapted to TV or movie ~ but the book I am reading now would be great, it is unique with great edge.

“As a child Julia grew up listening to the magical sounds of fair rides and animals from the theme park just across the stream at the bottom of her garden in Staffordshire, England. This combined with a love of reading, nature and the outdoors fed her imagination and developed into a love of creative writing.
After working with a Disney licensing company Julia then worked with tennis ace turned entrepreneur David Lloyd in an international resorts business. Her travels took her to many of the world’s most beautiful places, many of which she used in her descriptive setting for the Dragor series.”

‘I had been thinking back to the wonderful vintage books I had read and wishing there were more like this – but with unique and modern edge and an interactive web presence. Being a mother I knew first hand what parents were looking for when purchasing a book for their children, yet more than that, I felt strongly that I knew also what they sought themselves: gripping action, lots of adventure – all the classic aspects of heroes and villains, mystery and magic, quests and suspense, and the dream of happy endings.
I wanted to write books with universal appeal, that were fantastical and ‘out there’ and yet still felt somehow real; to fulfill the expectations of book lovers and also hook non-readers back into reading. For me this had to be in the form of a series set in a place we would all be excited to visit – and so the Land of Dragor came to be.
I designed the land integrating beautiful countryside, mountain trails, great waters and caves to explore. All the things I loved as a child and still do today. The most beautiful places that I had seen on my international travels formed the setting of Dragor: the amazing mountains of Colarado, the great deserts of Palm Springs, California, the vast waters in the Lake District, and the seaside caves of Cornwall – not forgetting the enchanting wilderness of Scotland. Dragor would be my ideal place to live – full of magnificent scenery, bursting with animals and nature’s magical flowers and plants. A place full of adventure, excitement and promise.’ – Julia Suzuki
