THE MOVIE: Divergent
THE PAIRING: Tobias Eaton/Four (Theo James) and Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley)
THE MOMENT: Tris and Four share their first kiss.
Divergent, the first in the trilogy based on the books, tells the story of teenage girl Tris who lives in a dystopian society (future Chicago) where everyone is divided by factions. When you come of age you take a test to find out where you belong, but in rare cases someone takes the test only to discover they are divergent: meaning they don’t fit into any of the five groups. Tris is one of those characters; in other words, a non-conformist who can’t be controlled. Divergent is a very dangerous thing to be and Tris finds herself having to keep what she is a secret from those who would have her destroyed.
When Tris has to decide which of the five groups she will join, she decides to go with the exciting one: Dauntless. Unfortunately, that means she can’t be with her family anymore who belong to Abnegation. Dauntless is like a crazed, scarier version of the army and Tris isn’t exactly “strong.” Vulnerability in tow, she joins the group and fights to find herself in the midst of pain and fear. There she also meets one of the teachers, Four. He’s the Mr. Darcy of the bunch: grumpy, moody and brooding. But as you get to know him, you discover he’s also brave, thoughtful, loving and protective. Not to mention very intelligent and handsome and oh yes…divergent. Of course, sparks quickly fly as they both discover what each other are.
The build up and chemistry in the film between Tris and Four was fantastically done, each and every scene between the two charged with attraction. Woodley and James lit up the screen together, the synergy between them some of the strongest I’ve seen between actors in a while. So for the romantic moment of the week, I thought I’d turn to the first time Tris and Four kiss. The build up between them was believable and when they kissed it felt earned instead of rushed, contrived and anti-climactic.
“Can I ask you something?” Tris asks, breaking the silence between the two.
“Sure,” Four replies. (By now you can guess they’re going to kiss soon; the tension is explosive here.)
“What’s your tattoo?”
(Now that the two have been inside each other’s minds if you will, Four is much more willing to open up to Tris now.) He quickly asks: “Do you want to see it?”
Tris nods with a smile. Four takes off his shirt to reveal the detailed tattoo designs on his back.
“It’s amazing,” she says in awe. Tris moves her hand down his back touching each of the images. (The tension builds as Four is very aware of her touch.) “The factions…why do you have all of them?”
“I don’t want to be just one thing. I can’t be. I want to be brave…and I want to be selfless, intelligent and honest and kind….” (Four turns around to face Tris.)
“…Although I’m still working on kind.”
And then Four kisses her. You knew as an audience member it was coming, but it was a great moment. The emotions and feelings between them are explosive and very romantic.
