The Top 20 Least Romantic…Romantic Comedies

I am a huge fan of romantic comedies. I absolutely love them. There’s something so heartwarming in watching a couple fall in love. It’s what we all want, and in Romantic Comedies, you get to fantasize about it for just a little while. Reality’s pushed aside and the perfect romance every person dreams of is a reality. You get to see the first glance, the witty banter, and the beautiful courtship all in one fell swoop. And then you get the much anticipated happily ever after at the end of the movie. Was there ever any better formula for pure movie bliss?

So, when they end up disappointing, it’s a bit of a let down for me. You know what I’m talking about. Those movies that try to be funny but just aren’t, when the lead actors have no chemistry, or when the plot just plain sucks. That perfect dream’s shattered and in its place is a mere farce of what a good romance should be.

There’s a time and a place for ridiculous comedy, over the top theatrics, and just plain bad cinema. That place is most definitely not within a romantic comedy meant to sweep one away to a far-off land of blissful love. I don’t want to see a pairing that makes me want to gag, and I certainly have no desire to be barraged with dirty juvenile jokes. Those don’t belong here!

So, I’m letting loose with the absolute worst of the worst this week. These are the movies I could barely sit through. Of course, these are my subjective opinions!

About Rebecca Lane

Rebecca Lane grew up in the hot desert landscape of Tucson, Arizona where she decided early on she wanted to write, if only to mentally escape her blistering surroundings. She has always been enamored of the arts and literature. As a child she often wrote short stories, and rewrote the endings of novels that she simply could not abide. She received her Undergraduate degree from Sarah Lawrence College in New York, where she was lucky enough to also spend a year studying at Oxford University. While she began her journey dreaming of the day she would sing opera in a large Manhattan theater, she found in the end she could not stand waitressing and simply could not give up books and her hopes of someday writing them. She is currently working as a freelance writer/editor and earning her Masters in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University.

  1. I agree with most of these for sure. And it makes me wonder what the creative minds behind some of them were thinking. Especially Gigli and All About Steve. Woof. LOL
I must say though that I loved Mr. Wrong. Partly because I didn’t consider it a romantic comedy. I thought the chemistry between Ellen and Bill Pullman worked because it was supposed to be horribly awkward and the anti-romantic.
I’m probably the only person in the world that liked that movie but it made me laugh.
    Another fantastic list!

    • Thanks! I know, what were they thinking? There hasn’t been any really good romantic comedies for a while too. They seem like they’re going downhill to me. 🙁 Although, I must say I really liked Austenland., but that could be because I love the book too.

  2. As a guy I surprisingly agree with most of these… however, I think 40 yr old virgin is more of a straight comedy than an actual romantic comedy and is so incredibly ridiculously funny that it is hard to bash at all lol

I also liked the Breakup, even with the odd ending. I guess that would make it a bad romantic comedy lol But I liked the movie!

    • This is Rebecca’s list so I can’t say I can judge 40 yr old Virgin because I have never seen it. Doesn’t look like my kind of comedy at all. But I get the choice because sometimes it seems the media is trying to sell these kinds of comedies as being a sort of romantic comedy except they really aren’t.
