The Silver Petticoat’s Guide to Returning Fall TV 2013 – Part 2

returning fall TV

As promised, part 2 of returning fall TV 2013 is here. Again, we’re only highlighting the shows relevant to the site, so if you see some shows left off the list…that is why. So without further ado here you go:

NBC

The Show: Grimm

Premiere Date: October 25th

Starring: David Giuntoli (Eli Stone), Russell Hornsby, Reggie Lee, Silas Weir Mitchell (Prison Break), Sasha Roiz, Bitsie Tullock, Bree Turner and Claire Coffee.

Why you should tune in: The writers show actual knowledge of folk and fairy tales. On top of that, the writing is witty and funny (some of the writers come from the Buffy writing team). Plus it’s impossible not to be entertained by scene-stealer Silas Weir Mitchell as Monroe. The good news is that the first two seasons of Grimm are available for Amazon Prime members so you can catch up!

Official Description: “Detective Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli) is a Portland, Oregon homicide detective with a strange secret: he’s a descendant of an elite group of hunters who are charged with stopping the proliferation of supernatural creatures in the world. The Brothers Grimm wrote fairy tales that children have adored for generations, but imagine if their villains were real, and Nick was the only one who could stop them.”

ABC

The Show: Once Upon a Time

Premiere Date: September 29th

Starring: Jennifer Morrison (House), Ginnifer Goodwin (Something Borrowed, Big Love), Josh Dallas, Robert Carlyle (SGU Stargate Universe), Lana Parrilla, Colin O’Donaghue, Emilie de Ravin (Lost)

Why you should tune in: Neverland is coming! Plus, there’s Captain Hook, who is a hot Irish guy. The first two seasons of Once Upon a Time are available to watch on Netflix so you can catch up.

Official Description: “From the inventive minds of Lost executive producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis comes a bold new imagining of the world, where fairy tales and the modern day are about to collide.”

The Show: Revenge

Premiere Date: September 29th

Starring: Madeline Stowe (The Last of the Mohicans), Emily Van Camp (Everwood), Nick Wechsler (Roswell), Gabriel Mann

Why you should tune in: Because it’s good addicting fun. Also, Justin Hartley (Smallville) joins the cast for season three! Plus the spoilery promo below looks like the show is going back to its season one roots of campy revenge with soapy storytelling. If you haven’t watched yet or are behind, the first two seasons of Revenge are on Netflix.

Official Description: “Wealth, beauty and status define the people in this town, but one woman is willing to destroy everyone for the sake of revenge.”

CBS

The Show: Elementary

Premiere Date: September 26th

Starring: Jonny Lee Miller (Eli Stone, Mansfield Park, Emma), Lucy Liu (Charlie’s Angels), Aidan Quinn (Legends of the Fall)

Why you should tune in: We just discovered who the “real” Moriarty was in a VERY clever twist. On top of that, the chemistry between Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu is fantastic. There’s room for more than one Sherlock out there and Jonny Lee Miller is great in the role. This upcoming season has Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill, The Amazing Spiderman) joining the show in a recurring role as Mycroft. If that’s not enough reason to watch, I don’t know what is.

Official Description: “Elementary is a contemporary take on the legendary Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, a crime-solving duo that cracks the NYPD’s most impossible cases.”

The Show: Hawaii Five-O

Premiere Date: September 27th

Starring: Alex O’Loughlin (Moonlight), Scott Caan (Ocean’s Eleven), Daniel Dae Kim (Lost), Grace Park (Battlestar Galactica)

Why you should tune in: Season 3 ended on a gigantic cliffhanger, so they better explain what happens in the season premiere. Will Steve break Wo Fat, his arch enemy, out of prison to discover the truth? Also, the chemistry between the main cast-members still shines and makes for an entertaining show to watch. Plus, if you haven’t watched the show yet, you should check it out if only for the episode where “Mick” and “Spike” duel it out. Also, season 4 has Chi McBride of Pushing Daisies joining the cast.

Official Description: “HAWAII FIVE-0 is a contemporary take on the classic series about a new elite federalized task force whose mission is to wipe out the crime that washes up on the Islands’ sun-drenched beaches.”

The Show: The Good Wife

Premiere Date: September 29th

Starring: Julianna Margulies (ER), Josh Charles (Dead Poets Society), Archie Panjabi, Matt Czuchry (Gilmore Girls), Christine Baranski (Mamma Mia), Alan Cumming (X2), Chris Noth (Sex and the City)

Why you should tune in: Besides the fact that it’s one of the best-written shows on television, it is never boring to watch. The Good Wife has the best guest stars out there that are sometimes even more entertaining than the main cast. Also, the season ended on a big game changer with Alicia leaving the firm and joining Cary to start a new one so it will be interesting to see where the show picks up.

Official Description: “THE GOOD WIFE is a drama starring Emmy Award winner Julianna Margulies as a wife and mother who boldly assumes full responsibility for her family and re-enters the workforce after her husband’s very public sex and political corruption scandal lands him in jail.”

FOX

The Show: Glee

Premiere Date: September 26th

Starring: Matthew Morrison, Lea Michelle, Chris Colfer, Jane Lynch, etc…

Why you should tune in: On a sad note, I think most everyone will want to tune in, even if they haven’t been watching for a long time (myself included), to see the tribute episode to the recently passed Cory Monteith as the loveable football playing, ballad singing Finn. The tribute episode will be the third episode of the new season. Previous seasons of Glee are available to watch on Netflix.

Official Description: “GLEE is a musical comedy about a group of ambitious and talented kids who escape the harsh realities of high school by joining a glee club where they find strength, acceptance and, ultimately, their voice.”

CW

The Show: The Vampire Diaries

Premiere Date: October 3rd

Starring: Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerhalder (Lost), Paul Wesley, Candice Accola, Steven R. McQueen, Kat Graham

Why you should tune in: Katherine just became a human, Elena professed her love to Damon, Bonnie is supposedly dead haunting the recently resurrected Jeremy, Stefan has an evil doppelganger, and Caroline is starting to warm up to the Byronic Klaus. So yeah, there’s all that. Plus it’s fun to watch. The first three seasons are on Netflix. Make sure to watch the amazing recap (with a sneak peek at season 5 at the end) below.

Official Description: “Think you know vampires? You don’t. As Elena (Degrassi: The Next Generation’s Nina Dobrev) starts the school year, she tries to forget a difficult past. Little does she know that in her future are two vampire brothers – Stefan (Paul Wesley – Everwood) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder – Lost) – warring for her soul. Mystic Falls will never be the same.”

The Show: Hart of Dixie

Premiere Date: October 7th

Starring: Rachel Bilson (The O.C., Jumper), Jaime King, Cress Williams, Wilson Bethel, Scott Porter

Why you should tune in: It’s a cute, light-hearted escape from all the serious drama out there. If you loved Gilmore Girls you might just enjoy this small town ensemble show. One only hopes they can find a way to get Laura Bell Bundy as the neurotic (but oh so entertaining) Shelby to join the cast. The show left Zoe spending her summer in the city. So what will happen when she returns to Blue Bell again? You can watch Hart of Dixie on Netflix.

Official Description: “Rachel Bilson leads a stellar ensemble cast in this fish-out-of-water comedic drama about small-town living and big-city attitudes. As a transplanted Manhattan surgeon, Dr. Zoe Hart feels the culture shock of her new general practice in BlueBell Alabama, but perhaps she might belong in this community more than she ever imagined.”

The Show: Beauty and the Beast

Premiere Date: October 7th

Starring: Kristin Kreuk (Smallville), Jay Ryan, Austin Basis (Life Unexpected), Nina Lisandrello, Sendhil Ramamurthy (Heroes)

Why you should tune in: Brad Kern, the co-creator and showrunner of Charmed, YES CHARMED, has joined season two as co-showrunner alongside Jennifer Levin and Sherri Cooper (my two favorite writers of season one). The writer behind the arc of the unforgettable Cole has got some new ideas up his sleeve for the sophomore drama. They’ve also announced the Beast will have a new more beastly appearance (yay!) as well as new cast additions with possibly recurring roles. What will happen next with Vincent now captured by Muirfield?

Official Description: “Catherine Chandler, played by Kristin Kreuk, is a smart, no-nonsense homicide detective. When she was a teenager, Catherine witnessed the murder of her mother at the hands of two gunmen. Catherine would have been killed too, but someone – or something – saved her. No one has ever believed her, but she knows it wasn’t an animal that attacked the assassins, it was human.”

The Show: Supernatural

Premiere Date: October 8th

Starring: Jensen Ackles (Smallville), Jared Padalecki (Gilmore Girls)

Why you should tune in: There’s a mix of horror, comedy and interesting mythology, not to mention the bond between the two supernatural hunting brothers. It’s an addicting show and you can start watching it (if you haven’t already) on Netflix. What will the new season bring?

Official Description: “Supernatural takes viewers on a journey into the dark world of the unexplained. More than 20 years ago, Sam and Dean lost their mother to a demonic force. Now, searching for the demon who destroyed their family, they encounter creatures that most believe exist only in folklore or superstition – vampires, spirits, and even bloody clowns.”

The Show: Arrow

Premiere Date: October 9th

Starring: Stephen Amell, Katie Cassidy, David Ramsey, Paul Blackthorne (The Dresden Files), John Barrowman (Doctor Who, Torchwood), Emily Bett Rickards,

Why you should tune in: The first season ended with the destruction of a good part of the poor part of the city (with a lot of death and tragedy including a main character), so it will be interesting to see where the show picks up. Scene stealer, Emily Bett Rickards as Felicity has joined the cast full time so there will be more of her which is never a bad thing. (I know I can’t be the only one rooting for them over what I think is the bland relationship between Oliver and Laurel). Anyway, Arrow producers have a tendency to know how to cast and pick actors from popular fandom. Arrow is one giant nerd fest and just plain entertaining.

Official Description: “Reinventing the DC Comics character, the Arrow is not a superhero … but a hero – every bit as dangerous as the criminals he’s hunting. After being marooned for five years on a remote island, billionaire Oliver Queen returns home with a mysterious agenda and lethal set of new skills that he uses in a war on crime in this action series.”

The Show: The Carrie Diaries

Premiere Date: October 25th

Starring: AnnaSophia Robb (Soul Surfer, Bridge to Terabithia), Austin Butler, Freema Agyeman (Doctor Who), Matt Letscher, etc…

Why you should tune in: It’s fun to watch teens in the 80s again! Plus it’s nostalgic and well written. Not to mention how well cast this show is.  Plus Samantha is coming…

Official Description: “Based on the novel by Candace Bushnell, The Carrie Diaries – a one-hour drama from Sex and the City writer/co-producer Amy B. Harris and Gossip Girl executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage – is the origin story of how Carrie Bradshaw – known and loved by audiences worldwide – became Carrie Bradshaw. AnnaSophia Robb stars.”

AMC

The Show: The Walking Dead

Premiere Date: October 13th

Starring: Andrew Lincoln (Love Actually)

Why you should tune in: With suspense, good writing and lots of action, not to mention zombies, it’s become one of the most popular shows on TV.

Official Description: “AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” the most watched drama in basic cable history, explores a desolate world in which Rick and his band of survivors must fight the dead to survive.”

USA

The Show: Covert Affairs

Premiere Date: October 17th

Starring: Piper Perabo (The Prestige, Coyote Ugly), Christopher Gorham (Ugly Betty), Kari Matchett (Invasion), Peter Gallagher (While You Were Sleeping)

Why you should tune in: Annie Walker is a smart, likable heroine who gets to go on spy missions as well as have some of the best love interests out there. What will happen between Annie and Auggie next?

Official Description: “New jobs are tough — especially when your new employer is the CIA. Annie Walker (Piper Perabo) is fluent in six languages, has traveled the world and is besting her fellow CIA trainees in every test. But that doesn’t explain why she’s suddenly summoned by CIA headquarters to report for active duty as a field operative one month before her training is over. She doesn’t know there may be something — or someone — from her past that her CIA bosses are really after.”
